Man Gets Charged With DWI After Crashing Into Liquor Store

News sources reported that Keith Alan Potretzke, a man from Burnsville, Minnesota, received a DWI charge after allegedly running into a liquor store building while driving drunk. The incident occurred last December, when Bursnville police officials responded to an emergency phone call from Big Discount Liquors employees, saying that someone had crashed into the side of the store. Witnesses described the suspect as a white male in his 50’s. They also told police personnel that he was “stumbling around” the parking lot…and left the scene in the partially-mangled vehicle after the liquor store staff refused to sell him alcohol.

Police officials reported the brick wall had minor damages, but no structural damage. Luckily, Big Discount Liquors employees were able to write down and give the man’s license plate number to the police officers. It was then determined that the vehicle belonged to Potretzke, who was found at a Bloomington restaurant where he was employed. Police officials located Potretzke’s vehicle, which had apparent damage in the front end, at the restaurant’s parking lot. Potretzke told police that he’d left the scene because the building seemed unscathed by the crash and denied drinking any alcohol. However, officers were able to detect a strong alcohol odor on him and noticed that he had bloodshot eyes and a poor balance.

Potretzke was administered various field sobriety tests, all of which he failed. Legal officers were able to determine that his blood alcohol content was .24, three times the legal limit. Potretzke received two charges of gross misdemeanor DWI, which have penalties of serving one year in prison and a $3,000 fine. In addition, he also received a charge for for his hit-and-run crime, failing to notify the store owner of the accident, which has a penalty of serving 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine. Potretzke is summoned to appear in court for a hearing on February 11.

william hollandWilliam Holland, the Illinois Auditor General, was arrested for DUI in Springfield, Illinois on February 6, 2013. Holland himself confirmed that he was charged with DUI and improper lane usage at around 11:45 pm on Wednesday. According to a police report, Holland displayed symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as glassy eyes and had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath when police questioned him during a routine traffic stop. Holland was released from jail after paying a $100 bail and said “I was in my own car. It was not a state vehicle. There was nobody else with me. I was on my own time. I’m happy to say that there was no damage to any property or any individual“. With that said, Holland declined to make any further comments, citing the incident as a personal matter. Holland was appointed to his third term as Auditor General last year and received high praise from lawmakers for his investigation into the administration of former Governor Rod Blagojevich. Daycare Mother Gets Sent To Prison For DWI

Daycare Mother Gets Sent To Prison For DWI

Times Record News reported that Holly Marie Wooton, a 33 year old mother and owner of an at-home daycare business in Wichita Falls, Texas, was found guilty of a DWI with a child under 15 years old in the car after being arrested May 16, 2012, at Cunningham Elementary with three children in the van. Wooton will face two years of jail time for the crime.

It is known that on May 16, Wooton was driving with three children (two 1 year olds and one 3 year old) to Cunningham Elementary to pick up one of her children. Upon arrival at the school, one of the faculty members called police officials to report that Wooton was seen acting very strangely. One of the police officers, Justin Miller, stated that Wooton approached him and said, “I’m guilty. I’m drunk. Just take me away.” Wooton was administered several field sobriety tests, all of which she failed. She admitted to smoking marijuana in her bedroom that day…and drinking two 24 ounce beers, but in court admitted to drinking all night then drinking more around lunch time.

One of the mothers of the children in the van and a friend of Wooton told sources that Wooton is someone who needs help with the addiction she is battling, and she has not forgiven her. According to Wooton’s testimony, she acted the way she did because she had recently discovered that her brother had cancer. In addition, she also admitted to having alcoholic problems. Child Protective Services intervened and took her children for a short time until her CPS caseworker spoke highly of her efforts and felt she was fit to raise her children. One of the other mothers told sources, “She took my most precious treasures and treated them like they were nothing.”

DUI Suspect Claims Aliens Took Him To Crash Site

joel lankfordDUI suspect Joel Lankford was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident on January 21, 2013 in Logansville, Georgia. It’s not uncommon to hear about a DUI suspect blaming everything but alcohol after a DUI crash, however, Lankford’s explanation may surprise you. The incident began when officers responded to a call from a woman claiming that someone was trying to kill her and found her bleeding profusely after arriving at a church parking lot. Police also found another vehicle, wheels still spinning and engine still running, in a ditch nearby.

Police inspected the vehicle but found nobody inside it. Maryana Ivaskiv, the woman involved, was treated by EMS while deputies investigated the scene of the crash. Approximately 10 minutes later, police received a call from a home near the scene complaining of a prowler on their front porch. That was when police found Lankford and said that he told them “the aliens brought him there“. According to the police report, Lankford also thought he was in Lilburn, not Logansville. Police noticed symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as slurred speech, unsteady balance and an odor of alcohol. Police arrested Lankford for DUI and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office says the incident is still under investigation.

Austin Firefighter Gets Arrested for DWI

Austin Firefighter Gets Arrested for DWI
James Doyle
The Austin American-Statesman reported that James Doyle, an Austin firefighter, has been suspended for 3 months for a DWI. Doyle, 31 years old, was stopped by police officials on November 19 when he failed to signal before changing lanes and swerved in and out of the lanes. The police report stated that Doyle was “slurring and stumbling” and was unable to properly perform a sobriety field test. Doyle told police officials that he had “consumed one to two ‘Bud Lights.'”

It was determined that this was not Doyle’s first DWI; he had two other prior DWI affiliated arrests since 2006. However, the affidavit stated that Doyle did not have any prior DWI charges at the time of his arrest. A representative for the Austin Fire Department, Michelle DeCrane, told sources that Doyle was suspended without pay. Doyle will also have to comply with other penalties such as completing  a counseling and  rehabilitation program for alcohol consumption problems, and take random alcohol tests for about a year after his probation ends. It was noted that if Doyle failed to fully comply with the penalties, he will be suspended indefinitely without the right to appeal. Doyle is summoned to a court hearing on February 27.

Alcohol Intoxicated Driver Kills Himself and Passenger

Alcohol Intoxicated Driver Kills Himself and Passenger

Sources  stated that an alcohol intoxicated driver and cannabis smoker, who rolled his car into a power pole, killed himself and the passenger with him. It was determined by the Coroner Ian Smith that Kyle John Gregor, the driver of the car, had been driving at approximately 118 kmh as it passed another vehicle in an 80 kmh driving zone. Smith stated that Gregor “lost control as it rounded a right hand bend, fishtailed and hit a crash barrier…then spun around, leaving the road, rolling, and coming into contact with a post and wire fence before finally impacting a concrete power pole, which was demolished on impact.”

Gregor, who was only 22 years old and a local from Stokes Valley, died at the scene. Brendon Lee Roy Mehlhopt, a 20 year old and one of the passengers in the vehicle, received serious injuries and died in the hospital. William Higgins, an 18 year old and another one of the passengers, was able to climb out a rear window of the car with only minor cuts and bruises. Toxicology lab reports determined that all three individuals had alcohol in their system at the time of the accident. Gregor’s blood alcohol level was 101 milligrams, which exceeded by far the legal limit of 80 mg. In addition, Smith disclosed that “there was also cannabis in his system.” Smith told sources that “this was clearly an avoidable tragedy that has taken two young men’s lives and again highlights the danger of driving while alcohol intoxicated and under the influence of cannabis.”
