Alameda Ta’amu, defense football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers, deferred his right to a preliminary hearing that derived from the multiple charges he received from his recent DUI. Police records show that Ta’amu, who is only 22 years old, was charged with “aggravated assault, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and fleeing an officer…leaving the scene of an accident, DUI and escape, all misdemeanors, in addition to several summary driving offenses.” 

On Thursday, prosecutors managed to remove three aggravated assault charges. One of the criminal complaints stated that Ta’amu was violently driving “through the South Side in his Lincoln Navigator, nearly striking several officers who attempted to stop him in the early morning hours Oct. 14.” In addition, he hit four parked vehicles with his truck and injured a passenger in one of them. Officials stated he ran out of his vehicle, stripped his shirt off, and began to flee away from authorities. Once they caught up to him, Ta’amu refused to comply with the arrest procedures so an officer had to punch him.

Devin Ebanks, who is a forward player for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, was arrested for a DUI earlier this morning. Records stated that Ebanks, 23 years old, was pulled over in Los Angeles around 3 AM near the Hollywood area. He was apprehended by California police officers and taken to jail, where he was later let out after paying a $5,000 bail. Posts from his Twitter account claimed that he was celebrating a woman’s birthday at the Roxbury night club. Ebanks’ next scheduled court date is December 7, according to booking records.

Sources stated that “it was Ebanks’ second incident with law enforcement in a little more than a year.” Last December, a woman accused Ebanks of sexually assaulting her but prosecutors refused to file charges against him. He originally joined the LA Lakers right out of West Virginia and resigned with them last August for one more year for $1.4 million.

X Factor contestant, Lexa Berman, was arrested this past weekend for a DUI in Delray Beach, Florida. She might lose the privilege of participating in the next round of X Factor, where contestants are given the opportunity to compete for a recording contract. Berman, who is 22 years old, had recently “auditioned for the X Factor talent show in front of Britney Spears and Simon Cowell in San Francisco.”

Delray Beach police officials stated that Berman was driving through the intersection of Linton and South Ocean boulevards when she “first collided with another car…then crashed into some bushes and a block wall just down the road.” When police officials approached her, Berman confessed she was coming from a show in West Palm Beach, where she had two drinks. An officer administered a field sobriety test, during which she “piped up” and laughed, “Can’t even do that sober.” Officials stated that she failed to balance while walking heel to toe and fell into the bushes.

Berman’s blood alcohol test determined that she had a BAC of .288%, which is almost three times the legal limit in the state of Florida. She was arrested and taken into Palm Beach County Jail, where she was later bailed out. No other information was disclosed.

Nadya Suleman, better known as TV personality Octomom, is headed to a rehabilitation center after her father publicly expressed concern over her drinking habits. However, it turns out that Suleman has checked into the Chapman House Drug Rehabilitation Center for a Xanax addiction. Before admitting herself to the treatment facility, Suleman’s father left a voicemail with Gina Bryson, a Rossmoor mother who had watched his daughter’s children. In the voicemail, Suleman’s father can be heard saying, “Gina, this is me, Ed. I’m worried about Nadya. She’s not answering the phone. And I really worry about her. Sometimes she starts drinking vodka, whatever, so maybe she should not be driving.”

Apparently, Suleman was originally prescribed Xanax to treat anxiety and stress that she attributes to being a single mom on welfare. Suleman has struggled with alcohol abuse in the past and even admitted once that she would be unable to drive her kids home after having too much to drink at a party. Bryson has stated that she often saw the Octomom intoxicated after indulging in her favorite drinks, vodka and cranberry juice as well as wine. When Bryson, as well as several other nannies, came forward to authorities expressing concern over the well-being of her 14 children, Suleman claimed they were all nothing but gold diggers. Now, while the TV Octomom spends a few weeks in the rehab center, her kids will be watched by 3 seperate nannies and 2 of her friends.

Michael Wright, who is widely recognized for his role of Eddie King, Jr. in the 1990’s movie The Five Heartbeats and an actor on Oz, was arrested for a DWI. Sources claim that on Sunday morning, he “slammed his Rolls Royce into a parked NYPD patrol car…with two officers sitting inside!”

University of Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint was arrested for DUI earlier this year and has been ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in addition to paying his fines and submitting to random drug and alcohol tests. On July 21, 2012 Toussaint was arrested around 11:45 p.m. when police in Saline, Michigan caught him running a red light. However, when police suspected Toussaint might be intoxicated, they asked him to submit to a breathalyzer test and found his blood alcohol content (BAC) level to be .12%, which is above the state’s legal limit of .08%. Police reported that Toussaint cooperated and the arrest proceeded without incident.”

Fitzgerald Toussaint is a junior at the University of Michigan and has been a valuable player for his team, running for more than 1,000 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns last season. His coach, Brady Hoke, said “Fitz made a poor decision and has been suspended indefinitely because of that action. There are expectations that come with being a football student-athlete at the University of Michigan and those responsibilities were not met in this instance. We will use this as an opportunity to educate Fitz and make sure he understands the high standards that we have established within our program“. Toussaint will have to pay $1,488 in fines, submit to random drug and alcohol testing for 90 days in addition to attending 10 meetings with Alcoholics Anonymous.

Tyrann Mathieu, former LSU cornerback football player and a one-time Heisman Trophy finalist, may have lost his chance to play college football again and of someday playing with an NFL team. Mathieu, better known as “Honey Badger,” and several of his former LSU teammates were arrested last Thursday for possession of marijuana charges. It was stated that they arrived at Mathieu’s apartment complex and “couldn’t figure out how to work a security gate and drew enough attention that it warranted a call to police who smelled marijuana and arrested the four former players on a variety of charges…after obtaining permission to search and finding  a marijuana grinder, digital scale, and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana…” They were apprehended and taken to a Baton Rouge, Louisiana jail.

Sources stated that Mathieu’s charge was a “first offense of simple possession.”  In August 2011, Mathieu was kicked off the LSU football team for failing a drug test and academic failure. Due to this, it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to play again with LSU. More importantly, his current situation might affect his chances of participating in April’s NFL draft.

On the other hand, other sources claim that “it’s certain that Mathieu will come into the NFL under the watchful eye of the league…it is the league that doles out four-game suspensions for positive marijuana tests—the same punishment given to first-time steroid users.”

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, former Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks player Mark Grace has been indicted for a DUI charge that occurred on August 23. If found guilty, he could face up to four years in prison. On October 3, a grand jury indicted Grace with “four felony counts of aggravated driving or actual physical control while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs.”

Legal authorities stated that each of Grace’s felony accounts carry severe punishments, including one to 4 years of imprisonment. However, they claimed that the punishments “would likely be imposed concurrently if he’s convicted because they relate to one incident.” Grace’s attorneys stated that he could reduce his jail time if he chooses to plead guilty. He does not qualify for probation because it is the second DUI charge he received within a 15-month time period.

On August 23, Grace was arrested by police officials for having a blood-alcohol level of .095%, which is above the legal limit of .08%. Furthermore, he was driving on a suspended driver’s license and did not have the mandatory interlock device that was supposed to be installed in his vehicle from a DUI he received in May 2011. Grace took a voluntary leave of absence after his second arrest, but the Diamondbacks recently placed him back in the broadcast booth after nine seasons.

Dash cam video of beauty queen Sarah Gafvert’s DWI arrest has been released. The 21-year-old was crowned Miss University of Arkansas on October 21, despite having been arrested for DWI on September 26. She was charged with a DWI after allegedly failing several field sobriety tests and violating traffic laws. Pageant personnel declared Gafvert eligible for competition. Gafvert did alert pageant officials of her arrest and that her case was pending, and that she was fighting her charges.

Gafvert was stopped by a police officer for suspicion of drunk driving. The arresting officer said that “she had bloodshot and watery eyes and slurred speech…her car gave off an odor of intoxicants…” Her blood alcohol level registered at .13%, which violated the legal limit of .08%. She was apprehended and taken to Washington County Detention Center at 3:37a.m., and was released on a bond of $1,200. She will be summoned to a hearing at Fayetteville City Court next Monday. As for now, she faces misdemeanor DWI charges as well as charges for driving with an expired driver’s license and failure to use turning signal device.

Denver Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams is finally serving his sentence for DUI. He was arrested on November 12, 2010 for DUI. According to NY Daily News, he has been sentenced to 30 days of house arrest that he can begin after the end of the season. After a lengthy court process, the judge sentenced Williams to house arrest beginning on Febuary 7, 2013. In addition to his house arrest, Williams must also complete 2 years probation, 56 hours of community service, pay $2,390 in court costs and attend alcohol education classes. Though Williams was originally arrested for DUI, a jury later found him guilty of the lesser charge of driving while ability impaired. Williams is currently serving a 3 game suspension mandated by the NFL since his conviction.

Williams has had run-ins with the law previously. Before beginning his current suspension period, he had just completed a separate 6 game suspension he received for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing substance policy. Since the start of the season, Williams has been banned from his team headquarters and is not allowed to practice or speak with the media until his suspension is over. His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said “We thought it was a fair and appropriate sentence given all the circumstances“. D.J. Williams was originally pulled over for driving without his headlights on, however, after failing several field sobriety tests, he was placed under arrest for DUI. Williams is expected to resume practice on November 12, 2012.
