Drunk Driver Gets Sentenced To Life In Prison

The San Antonio Express reported that Arturo Noriega, a 37 year old drunk driver, was sentenced to life in prison Friday for a drunken crash in which he killed another man. On 2011 Labor Day weekend, Noriega sped past a red light and crashed into a Honda accord, killing the driver-Richard Casas. Prosecutors stated that Noriega slammed into Casas’ Honda Accord so violently that the passenger side of his car was obliterated. According to the news source, Noriega reacted very aggressively towards medical responders and legal personnel at the time of the accident. In addition a blood test revealed cocaine in his system and an alcohol level of 0.246, which is a little more than three times the legal limit of .08.

Although drunk driving charges that result in intoxication manslaughter charges typically carry a maximum of a 20 year prison sentence, Noriega received a life sentence due to his prior drunk driving charges. It was determined that he already had three drunk driving convictions when he took the wheel of his pickup on the night that Casas, who was 47 years old and the father of two children, was killed. Joseph Appelt, one of Noriega’s lawyers, stated that he might be eligible for parole upon serving 30 years. Upon hearing his sentence, Noriega sobbed and stated, “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about Mr. Casas and his family…I would never hurt anybody intentionally.”
