Fort Worth Police Officer Fired After DWI Charge

Fort Worth Police Officer Fired After DWI Charge

Nicolas RamirezFort Worth police officer Nicolas Ramirez was fired recently following his arrest for DWI earlier this year in Westlake, Texas. Ramirez was actually part of a DWI enforcement team, tasked with preventing and catching drunk driving. Ramirez was arrested on January 2, 2013 while off duty and in his personal vehicle at around 1 a.m. when an officer spotted him drifting onto the shoulder a few times. When the officer questioned Ramirez, he detected a slight odor of alcohol coming from his breath and asked him to perform a series of field sobriety tests. Ramirez failed those tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of DWI. He later submitted 2 breathalyzer tests, one showing his blood alcohol content (BAC) level to be .188% and the other showing .194%, both of which are more than double the legal limit of .08%.

Since Ramirez was charged with DWI having a BAC level above .15, the offence is a Class A misdemeanor and could result in up to a year in prison as well as a $4,000 fine. After a slew of DWI arrests involving Fort Worth police officers, Chief Jeff Halstead promised to take a tougher stance on officers who were arrested for DWI. One day after Ramirez was arrested for DWI, Halstead said that he would fire any officer arrested for DWI without waiting for the case to be resolved in the criminal justice system. Ramirez was officially placed on an indefinite suspension on Tuesday and has not appealed the decision yet. Before vowing to penalize officers more harshly, Chief Halstead generally punished officers with a range of suspensions periods or termination. Ramirez started working with the Fort Worth Police in 2009 as a DWI enforcement officer.

WWE Star Jimmy Uso Charged With DUI

WWE Star Jimmy Uso Charged With DUI

jimmy usoJimmy Uso, a wrestler with WWE, was arrested and charged with DUI on March 13, 2013 in Hillsborough County, Florida. Uso, whose real name is Jonathan Solofa Fatu, was arrested around 12:30 pm and released a few hours later on a $500 cash bond. Currently, it is unclear what Uso’s blood alcohol content (BAC) level was at the time of the incident or if he performed any field sobriety tests before his arrest. This is the second time that Jimmy Uso has been arrested for DUI, with the first being in September of 2011. Uso was arrested for that first DUI after an officer saw Uso driving down the wrong side of a street at 3 in the morning.

The WWE has been known to step in and penalize some of their wrestlers for incidents occurring outside of the ring, however, they have only usually done so when a wrestler has been involved in DUI pertaining to possession of drugs since the company mandates drug testing. Uso could be safe from any action on behalf of the WWE at the moment since “WrestleMania” is just on the horizon. Another wrestler, Jack Swagger, was charged with DUI and drug possession on February 19, 2013. After Swagger’s arrest, the WWE commented saying, “Mr. Swagger is responsible for his own personal actions“.

New Mexico Might Outlaw Alcohol Sales to DWI Convicts

New Mexico Might Outlaw Alcohol Sales to DWI Convicts

The New York Times reported that New Mexico, which has one of the highest rates of alcohol-related traffic deaths in the nation, is considering to pass a new law that would outlaw individuals or businesses to sell alcohol to DWI convicts. If passed, the bill will make it illegal for DWI convicts to purchase alcohol anywhere- stores, restaurants, bars, etc. This bill would expand New Mexico’s law that requires DWI convicts to have an ignition interlock device, which prohibits the vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected, installed on their vehicle for at least one year.  It was noted that this could be perhaps one of the most restrictive drunken driving laws in the nation. Sources stated that a lot of decision makers strongly favor the bill. This week, the measure sailed through the state House of Representatives in a 59-5 vote, and it was scheduled to be taken up by a Senate committee on Friday.

CSI Actor Carmine Giovinazzo Pleads Guilty To DUI

CSI Actor Carmine Giovinazzo Pleads Guilty To DUI

carmine giovinazzoCarmine Giovinazzo, one of the stars in television’s CSI:NY, has pled guilty to DUI after his arrest earlier this year in Scottsdale, Arizona. Apparently, the CSI actor has reached a deal with prosecutors and will enter a guilty plea in exchange for a lesser sentence. By pleading guilty, Giovinazzo can avoid spending any time in jail if he completes an alcohol training program by May 3. If Giovinazzo should fail to meet that requirement though, he could risk spending 10 days in jail. It is likely that Giovinazzo was granted a lesser sentence by prosecutors because he is a first time offender and his DUI did not involve property damage or cause injury to another driver.

It may have also helped that the actor was extremely kind and cooperative during the entire ordeal, according to officers. Carmine Giovinazzo was pulled over on January 21, 2013 around 2:40 am after police spotted him swerving all over the road in his Jeep Wrangler. Giovinazzo initially denied drinking and said that his erratic driving could be attributed to him being lost and resorting to a GPS device. However, he later admitted to drinking when officers noticed several symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol on his breath. According to the arresting officer, Giovinazzo had a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of .149% and “thanked me many times for not treating him like a criminal and showing him respect“.
