Red Sox Pitcher Drake Britton Arrested For DUI

drake brittonDrake Britton, a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, was arrested and charged with DUI on March 2, 2013 in Fort Estero, Florida. Britton was arrested around 5 a.m. Saturday morning after an officer paced him at a max speed of 111 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer pursued Britton on Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, noting that Britton’s vehicle was swerving in between vehicles before jumping a curb and proceeding down a small hill and crashing into a barbed wire fence. After plowing over the fence, Britton allegedly continued driving another quarter mile down a dirt road before finally coming to a stop in a wooded area. According to the police report, when the arresting officer asked Britton for his drivers license, he was was given a debit card. In addition to DUI, Britton was also charged with property damage and reckless driving.

The arresting officer also noticed several symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as slurred speech, watery bloodshot eyes and an odor of alcohol. When the officer requested that Britton take a breathalyzer test, he refused. However, after Britton admitted to drinking, he was placed under arrested for DUI and taken to the Lee County Jail. Red Sox Manager John Farrell commented on the incident, saying, “This is a matter that the Red Sox take very seriously, and it is being addressed. We take every situation like that seriously. In this case with Drake, it’s still being addressed. We’re still gathering information and the facts of what transpired. Fortunately in this case, there was no one injured. But the bottom line is, it’s a very serious issue with us“. Drake Britton was scheduled to pitch on Sunday behind Ryan Dempster, however, he was scratched from that game and optioned to Double-A Portland on Monday.
