Drunk Driver Passes Out In The Middle of Interstate

The Times-Picayune reported that on Saturday morning, a drunk driver- Leronne Triplett- passed out behind the wheel of his car and came to a stop in the center lane of Interstate 10 in Kenner, Louisiana. A representative from the Kenner Police Department, Sgt. Brian McGregor, reported that no individuals were injured because police personnel responded right on time to the incident. Kenner and another police officer, Arthur Coll, spotted Triplett’s vehicle stopped in the center eastbound lane of I-10 as they were transporting prisoners to the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna.

It was reported that Triplett was found passed out in the front seat of the vehicle, and legal officers woke him up. McGregor stated that they were able to easily sense the alcohol odor that Triplett carried, and were able to detect that he was walking unsteady. Triplett failed the field sobriety tests that he was administered and had a blood-alcohol content level of .128%, which is above the legal limit of .08%. It was noted that he was booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center and charged with one count of DWI and another one for obstruction of highway. Man Faces Prison In Deadly Road Rage DUI

Man Faces Prison In Deadly Road Rage DUI

michael morenoMichael Moreno, 32, faces up to 29 years in prison after being involved in a deadly road rage DUI incident in Naperville, Illinois. On June 13, 2012, Moreno chased a 16 year old driving a Honda in a bout of road rage before turning left onto another street’s oncoming traffic and striking 63 year-old motorcyclist Gerald Puglise and killing him. According to police, Moreno fled the scene of the crash but was quickly apprehended by police. Police then took Moreno to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries where he also tested positive for marijuana and cocaine. The 16 year old girl driving the Honda was not involved in the accident and did not suffer any injuries.

George Bakalis, the Dupage County judge presiding over Moreno’s bench trial found him guilty of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, disorderly conduct and 2 counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs. State Attorney Robert Berlin issued a press release on Wednesday, saying, ““Mr. Moreno should never have been behind the wheel of a car that afternoon. Because of his reckless actions, Gerald Puglise is no longer with his family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them. While nothing can be done to bring Mr. Puglise back to those who loved him, perhaps today’s guilty verdict will provide some measure of solace to those he left behind“. Moreno now has a pre-sentencing hearing scheduled for April 22, 2013.

Grandparents Killed By Drunk Driver

Grandparents Killed By Drunk Driver

Fox News reported that two grandparents, Dennis and Judith Schulte, were hit and killed by a drunk driver. The Schulte’s were retired teachers, who had recently moved to Seattle from Indiana to be closer to their newborn grandson. It was determined that they were killed on Monday morning, when they were crossing the street near their apartment during a walk with their 10-day-old grandson and the boy’s mother. It was noted that the couple was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. In addition, the newborn- Elias- and his mother- Karina Ulriksen-Schulte- were listed in critical condition.

They also stated that Mullan performed poorly on several of the administered field sobriety tests. A preliminary test showed a breath alcohol level of 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08, the officer said. Mullan told authorities that he did not see the family crossing the street, because the sun was hitting his eyes. However, court records proved that Mullan has a long history of driving violations and several arrests for driving under the influence.

Vegas Stripper Charged With Felony DUI After Fatal Crash

shauna millerShauna Miller, a Las Vegas Stripper, was charged with felony DUI after being involved in a deadly crash on March 23, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to the police report, the incident took place at the intersection of Spring Mountain and Wynn Rd. around 7 in the morning. Miller was driving southbound on Spring Mountain when she struck the drivers side of a Ford Escort turning right at the Wynn intersection. The driver of the Escort, James Joseph White, was killed as a result of the collision while his 2 year-old son sitting in a car seat sustained minor injuries. According to officers at the scene, the Vegas stripper displayed several signs of intoxication such as constricted pupils, glassy eyes and a slight odor of alcohol.

When police asked Miller if she had been drinking before the accident, she told them that she had consumed 2 beers while working as a dancer at the Spearmint Rhino. The Vegas stripper told police that she drank her last beer around 3 or 4 am and that she had also taken a Xanax Pill the night before, which she did not have a prescription for. Police proceeded to give Miller a series of field sobriety tests, which she failed, resulting in her arrest for DUI. Police also noted that investigators believe White’s Escort was headed southbound as opposed to turning right as Miller recalls it. Investigators also saw no signs of pre-impact braking from the Miller’s Hummer, even though the Vegas stripper claimed that she tried to brake and avoid a collision. According to the police report, investigators are still trying to determine who ran the red light during the accident.

CEO of Martin Healthy Systems gets arrested for DUI

Mark Robitaille was arrested by a local Stuart police officer for DUI just a couple blocks away from Jensen Beach when he was caught in his white BMW swerving in and out of a bike lane. When the officer had asked him where he was coming from Robitaille had said that he was coming back from the Willoughby Country Club. The officer had also asked him how much he had to drink and Robitaille claimed he had only had two beers.

Robitaille is the CEO of Martin Health Systems, which consists of two hospitals, two MediCenters, an emergency center, and multiple clinics all around the Stuart, Florida area. It serves as a non profit organization for the community that offers a variety of healthcare services.

He stated ““I take full responsibility for my actions,” Robitaille said in a prepared statement. “Most importantly, I am profoundly grateful that this situation did not result in harm coming to anyone else.”

Robitaille is currently going through the legal process of obtaining a DUI after being caught having a blood-alcohol level of 0.151 percent when the legal level is 0.08 percent. Study Shows That Gasoline Prices Has An Impact On DWI Cases

Study Shows That Gasoline Prices Has An Impact On DWI Cases

New Mexico’s KRQE News reported that Steven Flint, head statistician at the Albuquerque DWI Resource Center, conducted a study demonstrating that as gas prices get higher, the amount of DWI cases drops. Flint told sources, “Interestingly when gas prices go up even dramatically, you only see a small change in the amount of gasoline sold…but that small change translates to some big differences in the kinds of driving people do.”  Flint determined that when gas prices go up, drunk drivers tend to change their behavior by consuming alcohol in different locations.

In addition, Sergeant Zak Cottrell from the Albuquerque Police Department’s DWI Unit stated that “People would be drinking alcohol at home more often…they’re not spending the money on gas to go out to the bars and drink and then drive home.” It was noted that the gas prices and DWI statistics discovered in New Mexico could more or less reflect the whole country’s DWI trends. Flint added that during the 2011-2012 year, gas prices rose up to more than $3.50/gallon, while DWI related crashes and deaths dropped down 15%. Likewise, when gas prices lowered, DWI related cases rose up 6%.

Texas State Representative Apologizes For DWI

Texas State Representative Apologizes For DWI

naomi gonzalezNaomi Gonzalez, a Democratic state lawmaker, apologized to the Texas Legislature for a DWI she received on March 14, 2013 in Austin, Texas. Gonzalez took to the floor of the Texas House Monday morning and gave an emotional apology that garnered cheers and a standing ovation. The Texas State Representative from El Paso was arrested for DWI after crashing into another vehicle, causing it to hit a bicyclist at around 2 in the morning. The cyclist, Gonzalez and the person in the vehicle she hit all went to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

After requesting special permission to address her colleagues in the House, she said “I want to be clear about this: I made a mistake and I am deeply, deeply sorry for it“. The Texas chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), said that they thought the apology ended up making Gonzalez look like a victim. After Gonzalez finished speaking, lawmakers apparently jumped to their feet, giving her high fives, hugs and even leaving flowers on her desk. Bill Lewis a liaison with Texas MADD, said that he understood the support for Gonzalez from other House members but that the flowers were “over the top“. Gonzalez began her career as a Texas State Representative after being elected in 2010 and serving on the House Ethics Committee.

Repeat DWI Offender Arrested Again Just After Prior Conviction

Repeat DWI Offender Arrested Again Just After Prior Conviction

diana quinnA repeat DWI offender who was just convicted of her second DWI was charged with another DWI on March 14, 2013 in Montgomery County, Texas. Diana Quinn is now facing a felony DWI charge after being pulled over by a DPS trooper for drunk driving yet again. According to Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, a DPS trooper witnessed the repeat DWI offender driving erratically and had just left the same lounge she’d been drinking at before getting her second DWI. Quinn’s third DWI arrest was apparently so close to her prior arrest that her criminal record had not yet been updated.

Apparently, when the trooper initially placed Quinn under arrest for what he thought was only her second DWI arrest, she notified him of her conviction that had taken place just days before. Although Quinn refused to submit a blood sample, the arresting officer was able to obtain one anyway since her charge had been elevated to felony DWI. Like many other law enforcement agencies throughout the nation, Montgomery County enforced a strict No-Refusal policy for St. Patrick’s Day that required drivers to submit blood samples in nearby BAT vans to be administered by nurses. County officials have stated that they’ve seen a 50% decrease in intoxication manslaughter charges since the program was implemented four years ago.

KOMO News reported that “a 9-year-old boy, Donovan, injured in a DUI crash died late Sunday after his family removed him from life support.” The crash occurred early on Saturday near Highway 16 in Purdy, Washington. Legal officers stated that after a family BBQ, Donovan and his sister were given a ride back to their grandparent’s home by their uncle, who was drunk and high on drugs when he lost control of the car and crashed. The boy was rushed to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, but after he showed no brain activity his family made the legal decision to turn off the breathing machine.
