Facebook and Twitter Used to Trump Efforts at DUI Checkpoints

Facebook and Twitter Help Warn People of DUI Checkpoints

Individuals are now using social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter to warn others of DUI checkpoint locations and thwart police efforts to catch suspected drunk drivers. People are aware that police officers often set up checkpoint areas to catch people who are breaking the law at peak times due to the frequency of events. Now people have found a way to circumvent getting these tickets or being arrested by reading their friends’ posts on Facebook and Twitter.

Police are known for being at certain checkpoints on Friday and Saturday nights, on New Years, and even parking in winery driveways to make sure and catch those who might be venturing out unsafely. Nowadays, all of these locations have stopped working because of the warnings people have been posting to their respective social media venues. Police at first were very interested that people are trying to help others by warning them in the first place!

As cited from Associated Press, the usual big checkpoints are no longer feasible for police officers trying to fill their monthly quotas. Police have been making efforts to start to take back roads or set up checkpoints at random times and locations during the week instead of their usual routines. Barbara Harsha of the Governors Highway Safety Association commented on the situation by saying, “Social media cuts both ways. It can be a good tool to inform the public about what’s going on, and it also can be used to undermine enforcement efforts.”

Even though police have been working to work around the situation, DUI’s are still administered like always. It’s not about getting caught, it’s about staying safe!

Oakland Raiders WR Jacoby Ford Will Not Face DUI Charges

Oakland Raiders WR Jacoby Ford Will Not Face DUI Charges

jacoby fordJacoby Ford, a wide-receiver with Oakland Raiders, was arrested for DUI on March 14, 2013 but will not be facing DUI charges after all. According to the Contra Costa Times, Oakland authorities have said they will not be pressing charges against the NFL player after reviewing the reports submitted by the California Highway Patrol. Prosecutors didn’t give any specific reason regarding the dropped charges and a spokesman for the Raiders said that “The Raiders organization is aware of the situation involving Jacoby Ford and takes matters such as this very seriously“.

Ford was pulled over for speeding and excessively tinted windows, however, upon questioning him, the officer noticed several symptoms of alcohol intoxication. Ford was given multiple field sobriety tests, all of which he failed. Since Ford will not be prosecuted for DUI, it is likely that he also won’t be facing any disciplinary action by the NFL, which has suspended players in the past for incidents occurring off the field. Multiple players have been charged with DUI offenses within the last year including Jay Ratliff and Josh Brent among others. Jacoby Ford is expected to play in the upcoming season despite missing all of the 2012 season with a foot injury.

Pittsburgh Mayoral Candidate AJ Richardson Waives DUI Hearing

Pittsburgh Mayoral Candidate AJ Richardson Waives DUI Hearing

aj richardsonAJ Richardson, a mayoral candidate in Pittsburgh was arrested for DUI on April 3, 2013 and has chosen to waive his preliminary DUI hearing. Richardson initially told reporters that he intends to plead guilty to the DUI charge, in addition to a charge of driving without valid registration. Now, when asked if he still intends to do so, he has deferred all legal questions to his attorney and said, “I don’t want to comment on that“. In response to entering a guilty plea, his attorney said while AJ Richardson wants to take responsibility for his actions but they are still looking at all options.

With regard to accountability, Richardson also told reporters “I’m a leader, I made a mistake, and I acknowledge that. Most leaders don’t even take accountability for their own errors. I did that, and that says something, and that’s the type of leadership we need in the next mayor, and that’s the type of leadership that’s in A.J. Richardson“. According to police, Richardson failed several field sobriety tests the night of his arrest and became verbally abusive, lashing out at officers and saying that they should “have some back bone and be a voice for the black people“. Richardson now denies having made those comments, calling them ugly and not representative of him. The mayoral candidate said pleading guilty was the honorable thing to do but shouldn’t disqualify someone from being mayor. AJ Richardson is set to appear in court for a formal arraignment on May 29, 2013.
