Police Detective Suspected of Being Involved in a DUI Crash

Police Detective Suspected of Being Involved in a DUI Crash

ABC 10 News reported that on Friday, a San Diego Police Department gang detective “was driving an undercover police car when he got into the solo crash in the 7300 block of Princess View Drive.” The detective, whose name has been withheld, has been employed with the San Diego Police Department for about 11 years now. It was also stated that he was off-duty at the time of the accident.

Lt. Andra Brown, a public affairs speaker for the San Diego Police Department, commented that the gang detective “suffered injuries that required hospital care.” It was determined that California traffic investigators have sent their investigations to the San Diego City Attorney’s office in order to determine what type of DUI charge will be administered to the gang detective.  Brown also stated, “The police department is still conducting a personnel investigation, so we will not identify the detective or make any further comment at this time.” For the mean time, the detective was put to serve desk duty instead of patrolling.

California Teacher Charged With DUI And Drug Possession

California Teacher Charged With DUI And Drug Possession

berkeley highA California teacher at Berkeley High School was arrested on December 1, 2012 for DUI and possession of the LSD drug. Douglas Gray Haight, 51, was arrested after being pulled over on a routine traffic stop when he ran a red light in San Rafael. When police began to question the California teacher, they noticed that he displayed several symptoms of alcohol intoxication and conducted some preliminary alcohol tests. After submitting a breath test, police found that Haight had a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of .13% and .12%, which exceeds the state’s legal limit of .08%.

Haight was arrested at the scene and after being taken into custody at the county jail, police found a bottle of breath mint that they suspected might contain drugs. When the breath mint liquid was tested, police found that tested positive for LSD, a hallucinogenic drug. Height was then released on bail and said that he had made “a mistake” when reached by telephone. Haight refused to make any further comments and Derek St. Pierre refused to comment as well. Mark Coplan, the spokesman for the school district declined to comment on the status of Haight’s position because it was a personal matter. Haight was hired at Berkeley High School this past August as a full time, temporary independent study teacher.

Babysitter Gets DWI After Crashing Car With Baby Inside

Sources stated that Deborah L. Angus, a local babysitter from Roselle Park, New Jersey, “was charged with driving while intoxicated after she flipped her car with the baby she was caring for in the backseat” on Tuesday afternoon. Luckily, police officials stated that the baby did not receive any injuries. However, Angus was severely hurt.

New Jersey police speaker, Sgt. Theodore Dima, stated that they “found the 2012 Nissan sedan overturned in the road near West Colfax Avenue with Donald Place after crossing into oncoming traffic and striking a tree on a lawn.” It was said that two police officers, Sgt. Aldo Cosentino and Patrolman Matthew Hopkins, had to crawl through all the debris and into the “heavily damaged sedan” to save the baby. The baby was found in the child safety seat in the back of the car.

The baby’s parents immediately arrived at the scene of the accident to get their baby. Sources stated that “Angus appeared intoxicated and smelled of alcohol at the crash site.” She received various criminal charges for DWI, driving while drunk with a minor in the car, child neglect, and reckless driving. Date Rape Drug Cause For Woman’s DUI?

BLOG TITLE

ghbLeigh Paffhausen, a woman in Missoula, Montana was arrested for DUI in 2010 and has been afforded another chance to plead her case with evidence that her impairment on the night of the arrest was caused by a date rape drug being slipped into her drink. The Montana Supreme Court has decided that Paffhausen should have the opportunity to present evidence that her actions during her arrest on January 18, 2010 for DUI were involuntary. Pauffhausen was arrested after an officer caught her run through a stop sign before slamming on her brakes at another. When the arresting officer initially questioned Pauffhausen, he noticed an odor of alcohol on her breath as well as slurred speech, both symptoms of alcohol intoxication.

Shortly after Pauffhausen was arrested, she admitted to having drank a small amount of alcohol but also told police that she believed someone had given her GHB, the date rape drug. However, Pauffhausen was denied her request to use involuntary intoxication as a defense by the Missoula Municipal Court as well as calling witnesses regarding the use of GHB throughout the city. After a 4-3 decision in the Montana Supreme Court in favor of Pauffhausen, Justice James Nelson said, “A hearing is a small price to pay if seeking justice and not simply a conviction is the object of criminal prosecutions“. Nelson also expressed concern over the possible implications that a victory for Pauffhausen could have on DUI law throughout the state if future offenders falsely claim to have been given a date rape drug.

8-month Pregnant Woman Arrested for Drunk Driving

A heavily pregnant woman was arrested for drunk driving by a Veazie police sergeant after the woman broke several traffic laws on the highway and then traveled toward downtown Old Town, Maine. The pregnant woman, Stephanie Dickey, 26, has since been released on bail.

Sgt. Emery saw Dickey’s car driving erratically and when he pulled her over, he reportedly smelled an “extremely strong” odor of alcohol. A man was in the passenger’s seat and a man and a woman were also in the back seat of the car, and Dickey identified herself as the designated driver. She denied drinking at first but eventually admitted to drinking two beers.

When questioned about her swerving, Dickey said she was distracted by her passengers and also said that she had a walking cast on her fractured right foot. This was not Dickey’s first OUI charge.

Dickey’s Intoxilyzer results showed that her blood alcohol content was 0.14%.

Chief Mark Leonard said, “She was eight months pregnant. I don’t know that I’ve seen someone who was that far along.”

Boulder DUI Officer Arrested…For DUI

Boulder DUI Officer Arrested…For DUI

elizabeth wardElizabeth Ward, a Boulder DUI enforcement officer, was arrested for DUI earlier this week in Thornton, Colorado. Ward was off-duty when the arrest occurred and is the 2nd officer with the DUI enforcement department to be arrested in a month. According to police, another off-duty officer spotted Ward driving north on I-25 around 2 am, driving at a slow speed and weaving in and out of lanes. That off-duty officer called and reported Ward to police, then proceeded to follow her. When an on-duty officer arrived, Ward was already pulled over on the side of the road and readily admitted she was drunk when questioned.

The arresting officer also noticed other symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as watery, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. When the officer requested that Ward take a field sobriety test, she could hardly maintain her balance and eventually declined any further tests. A sample of Ward’s blood was taken by Thornton police and she was issued a county summons for DUI as well as weaving. A Boulder police sergeant then took custody of Ward after being booked into jail. Detective Scott Morris, with the DUI enforcement department, was also arrested for DUI 3 weeks before Ward on November 15, 2012. Chief Mark Beckner said in a statement on Thursday that “Just one incident would have me concerned, so having two is very concerning, absolutely“. Both Ward and Morris have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Dad Abandons Children in Car After DUI Crash

Dad Abandons Children in Car After DUI Crash

Sources stated that on Tuesday evening, a Salt Lake City man “allegedly abandoned his two young children injured in his wrecked car while he fled from the scene of a traffic accident.” The 27 year old father was immediately taken to prison. Police officials claimed  that roughly around 8:25 p.m., he rear-ended another vehicle near 600 S. 700 East. He then fled from the scene of crime on foot, but left his kids alone.

The children, which were of ages nine and two, only received a couple of minor injuries. However, they were still taken to the nearest hospital for a medical evaluation. Legal officials communicated with the father via cell phone and persuaded him to come back to the crime scene.

After much delegation, legal personnel stated that “the 27-year-old man was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County jail, where he remained Wednesday in lieu of $4,956 bail.” He received multiple charges for DUI, having an expired license, and one count for hit and run.
