Firefighter James Schlener Fired For DUI in Pennsylvania

A firefighter in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has been fired after receiving a DUI on August 23, 2012. James Schlener, 41, was arrested after he crashed his car into a utility pole in the 1000 block of Eighth Avenue. When police gave Schlener a breath test, they found that his blood alcohol content was .25%, more than 3 times the state’s legal limit of .08%. According to fire Chief George Barkanic, Schlener had been on sick leave since August 21, although he was officially sent his letter of termination on September 20. Schlener had been charged with the highest rate of drunken driving and careless driving.

Schlener was not available for comment, but the President of the Bethlehem Firefighters Union said that Schlener has apologized for the incident as well as his actions and was taking “corrective measures” to resolve the issues. Schlener’s attorney, Donald Souders Jr., said that his client has waived his preliminary hearing and was planning to apply for the first-time offenders program. Schlener had been arrested in 2004, while serving as union president, for simple assault and domestic violence. According to court records, Schlener punched his girlfriend repeatedly and assaulted her with an aluminum sewing kit as well as a glass candle holder.

A drunk driver in Richmond, Rhode Island was arrested on September 30, 2012 for DUI while driving at a dangerously high speed with his 3 small children in the car with him. Derek Greene, 25, was caught by police driving 120 mph on Interstate 95 and suspected he might be under the influence of alcohol when they detected an odor of alcohol on his breath. Police also noticed that Greene displayed other symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, although, Greene refused to submit a breathalyzer test.

When police arrested Greene, they handed over custody of his 3 children, ages 2, 3 and 4, to their grandmother. Police have also initiated an investigation through Child Protective Services due to Greene’s lack of concern for his children’s safety. Greene has also been charged with failing to take due care as a driver, speeding, driving conditions requiring reduced speed and refusing to submit a chemical test. Superintendent of the state police and commissioner of public safety Col. Steven O’Donnell issued a statement saying, “This is another example of behavior that, if not prevented, could turn into another horrific tragedy. I commend our troopers for being vigilant to this never ending issue“.

Phil Bonus, the Vice Mayor in Maitland, Florida was arrested in December of 2011 for DUI and is headed to court on October 12, 2012. Apparently, Bonus was arrested after nearly striking two police officers who were directing traffic at a construction site near North 22nd street in Tampa. Around 9 pm on December 7, 2011, Bonus was making a U-turn when he nearly hit the first officer and proceeded south for another quarter mile before making another U-turn and almost striking another officer. Officers stopped Bonus after making his second U-turn and reportedly detected an odor of alcohol on his breath in addition to other symptoms of alcohol intoxication such as bloodshot, glassy eyes.

Police impounded Bonus’ Jaguar where they also found a loaded pistol, which Bonus did have a concealed license for. During the arrest, Phil Bonus apparently refused to take a breathalyzer test as well. This isn’t the first time the Vice Mayor has made headlines in Florida though. Bonus has also admitted to being a part of the East Orange County prostitution ring, with his name being among those on the client list. He allegedly visited the brothel a half dozen times and has gone on the record saying that he knows he’s made some “horrible choices” in the past, however, his family has since forgiven him.

On September 21, 2012, California resident Cara Cameron was found guilty of a murder she committed the previous month. Cameron, who is 26 years old, ran over an Australian tourist while she was drunk driving through the 300 block of Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, California. Australian tourist and notable former rugby player, Gary Robert Mara, and his family were walking across a street with a “Don’t Walk” sign when Cameron’s automobile crashed against them. Sources claim that the drunk driver, Cameron, “had been traveling Eastbound and had the green light, but failed to stop when the family crossed the intersection.” Mara was severely hurt by the crash and was transmitted to a nearby trauma center. He died the following morning. However, Mara’s 8 year old daughter-Olivia and 43 year old wife-Julianne survived the collision. Olivia received minor injuries and was admitted to a local hospital, while Julianne did not receive any injuries.

Drunk driver, Cameron, remained at the scene of the accident until the Santa Monica Police officials arrived. “During the investigation, authorities determined that she was under the influence and arrested her for felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.” Cameron was apprehended, but later released from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after paying a fee of $100,000 from her $1,000,000 bail. The Superior Court of Los Angeles-Airport Branch, the Santa Monica D.A. revised the charges made to Cameron to include murder after officials discovered that she had a previous alcohol-related accident in 2007. In addition, it was also discovered that Cameron had a history of consuming other substances such as marijuana, cocaine, Xanax, and DMT, a psychedelic. A preliminary hearing will begin on October 29th.

Georgia Sheriff Deputy Robert Christopher Matt was arrested for DUI in the early morning hours of October 3, 2012. At around 1:30 in the morning, Matt lost control of his police cruiser near Georgia 81 at Double springs road, crashing into an embankment causing the cruiser to overturn several times. The only passenger in the vehicle, 27 year-old Katie Lynn was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance to be treated for undisclosed injuries while Matt sustained only minor cuts and bruises. According to reports, Matt was not on duty at the time of the accident.

Matt was immediately taken to Walton County Jail where he was charged with DUI, failing to maintain lane, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident. When police arrived at the scene of the accident, the cruiser was empty, but they did find Katie Lynn walking nearby. Matt was found shortly after at his residence. Georgia Sheriff Deputy Robert Matt has officially resigned as of Wednesday morning and his Gwinnett Sheriff Butch Conway said he was “highly disappointed in the actions of Deputy Matt, who until this incident had a good work record with several commendations that included the Life Saving Award for his quick action in saving an inmate’s life who attempted suicide“.

Salvatore Cordileone, Archbishop of San Francisco, has plead guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving after his arrest for DUI on August 25, 2012. The archbishop’s arraignment was scheduled for next week on a misdemeanor DUI charge, however, he has instead plead guilty to the lesser misdemeanor charge of reckless driving also known as “wet reckless”. The reduced charge is usually standard for first time offenders. Salvatore Cordileone has been placed on 3 years probation and will have to pay a fine as well.

In addition to those penalties, Cordileone will also have to attend a victim panel led by the Mothers Against Drunk Driving and a 3 month first conviction program with the DMV. After his arrest, the archbishop admitted that his blood alcohol content(BAC) level was above the state’s legal limit of .08%, but never said by how much. Now, court documents show that his BAC level was .11% the night he was arrested. After his arrest, Salvatore Cordileone made a public statement saying, “I apologize for my error in judgment and feel shame for the disgrace I have brought upon the Church and myself“.

Stephanie Santana, a pregnant, drunk mother walked into a Houston tattoo shop on October 3, 2012, abandoning her parental responsibilities and leaving her 10-month old child in the car while she intended to get a new piercing. Stephanie Santana, 20, walked into the shop at around 4 am and asked the employee on hand how long the piercing would take. When the employee, who goes by the name Yogi, asked why she was asking, she apparently said, “because I have a baby in the car“. Yogi then proceeded to ask who was watching the child and she replied, “nobody, the baby is asleep“. Shop employee’s asked Santana to leave and saw her stumble back to her car before falling asleep behind the wheel, with the car running and her child sitting unrestrained in the passenger seat.

Victor Senties, the spokesman for the Houston Police Department said, “Our officers arrived [and] they found her exhibiting signs of being intoxicated” and also that they “found a child in the vehicle“. Houston Police gave Stephanie Santana a field sobriety test, which she failed and placed her under arrest. Santana has been charged with DUI, child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance. During a search of her vehicle, police found several bottles of beer inside a diaper bag as well as what they believe to be Xanax pills. Santana has been held on a $9,000 bond with her first court appearance set for Friday. Her 10-month old has been placed with Child Protective Services until they can find a suitable relative to care for the child. Yogi, the shop employee that called the cops said, “She got everything she deserves, because the baby was in danger and she needs to be where she needs to be“.

The troubled quarterback has also admitted to using ecstasy and cocaine in the past. Pachall’s father, Stan, found out about his son’s DUI arrest from media reports, saying, “You don’t expect things like to happen, it’s just unfortunateWe’re gonna get through this. It’s a wake up call for him; it’s been more than a wake up call –– it’s a wake up call for all of us“. Casey Pachall was released from Mansfield City Jail on $1,000 bond.

Linda Hogan, the ex-wife of famous wrestler and TV personality-Hulk Hogan, was imprisoned yesterday in Malibu on suspicion of DUI. California Law enforcement personnel claimed that Hogan “was arrested at 1:34 AM Thursday morning and taken to a nearby police station where she was booked and put behind bars. She was released several hours later on $5,000 bail.” In addition to receiving the DUI charge, Hogan was also arrested for driving with a suspended license. On her prison booking sheet, she was listed with an age of 53 years old, height of 5’7″, and weight of 160 lbs.

Hogan’s representative told TMZ that Hogan “was on her way home from a function in L.A. where she drank a glass of champagne on an empty stomach…she has also been on antibiotics and the drugs exacerbated the effects of the alcohol.”

She was primarily stopped by officials for speeding. It was not identified whether Linda  was the only passenger in the vehicle. It has also been said that the Hogan family has been under a lot of stress lately due to the sex tape scandal they are currently dealing with.

Bus Driver Gets DWI Charge

Long Island bus driver, Frederick Flowers, was charged with a DWI on Thursday “after he crashed a mini-school bus carrying five children into a house.” Police officials accused Flowers, who is 66 years old, of violently driving under the influence of alcohol and putting in danger the lives of 5 children– all were passengers in the bus. Fortunately, nobody was inside the “Syosset” house when the bus crashed through its garage door around 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Flowers was driving the children back home from St. Edward the Confessor Elementary School, which is located right across the street from the crash location.

Officials stated that “Flowers, was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the accident on Wednesday and remained hospitalized Thursday, police said. The five children, ages 5 through 9, weren’t hurt.” The police officials also assured that Flowers will be detained at his hospital bedside as soon as they can.

Maureen Richmond, who is a spokeswoman for the bus company that employees Flowers, stated that “Mr. Flowers is suspended from his job at First Student… and results for a full internal investigation are pending.” Under New York’s Leandra’s Law, Flower’s five counts of DWI charges are automatic felonies.
