Georgia Sheriff Deputy Robert Christopher Matt Arrested For DUI

Georgia Sheriff Deputy Robert Christopher Matt was arrested for DUI in the early morning hours of October 3, 2012. At around 1:30 in the morning, Matt lost control of his police cruiser near Georgia 81 at Double springs road, crashing into an embankment causing the cruiser to overturn several times. The only passenger in the vehicle, 27 year-old Katie Lynn was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance to be treated for undisclosed injuries while Matt sustained only minor cuts and bruises. According to reports, Matt was not on duty at the time of the accident.

Matt was immediately taken to Walton County Jail where he was charged with DUI, failing to maintain lane, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle and leaving the scene of the accident. When police arrived at the scene of the accident, the cruiser was empty, but they did find Katie Lynn walking nearby. Matt was found shortly after at his residence. Georgia Sheriff Deputy Robert Matt has officially resigned as of Wednesday morning and his Gwinnett Sheriff Butch Conway said he was “highly disappointed in the actions of Deputy Matt, who until this incident had a good work record with several commendations that included the Life Saving Award for his quick action in saving an inmate’s life who attempted suicide“.
