VW Memorial Ride for Man Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

A deadly crash was memorialized by a procession of VW Club members in honor of 25-year-old Jayme Midlam who was killed after April Thompson, 23, crashed her Chevy 2500 pickup truck into Midlam’s 1972 Volkswagen Beetle.

Thompson plead not guilty to her charges and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 14. California Highway Patrol officials suspected that April Thompson was under the influence of alcohol, and prosecutors said in court that Thompson had a blood alcohol level double the legal limit. She drove the wrong way on State Route 52 over New Year holiday weekend. She faces up to 10 years in prison if she is convicted on DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter charges.

On Saturday Jan. 5, VW Club members participated in a memorial ride to the 3400 block of Clarement to pay tribute to Midlam. Many of the VW drivers did not personally know Midlam but nevertheless wanted to honor Midlam and show support to his family. The VW’s posted signs in their windows that said, “RIP VW Brother”, evoking an unspoken sense of VW Bug owner camaraderie. Dori McLauren participated in the memorial and said she wanted to show love for the fellow “VW Brother.”

“We’re here to support him and his family. What happened was extremely tragic and unnecessary and we’re here to show our love for him,” said McLauren. “It doesn’t matter whether you know him or not.”

MLB Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk Pleads Guilty To DUI

MLB Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk Pleads Guilty To DUI

carlton fiskCarlton Fisk, a former White Sox Hall of Famer, has plead guilty to misdemeanor DUI after being arrested for DUI earlier this year in New Lenox, Illinois. Fisk was arrested on October 22, 2012 after police found him passed out behind the wheel of his F-150 truck in a field. The truck was still running when police found Fisk as well as an opened bottle of vodka. The retired pitcher had apparently mixed his prescription medication with alcohol before crashing into the farm field. Carlton Fisk played for the White Sox for 13 years and was inducted into the Hall of Fame 7 years after retiring in 1993.

Fisk took responsibility for his actions and signed a guilty plea with his lawyer saying in court, “This is no pun, but he stepped up to the plate and said, ‘I want to accept responsibility for what I did’. I admire that.“. Will County Judge Bennett Braun ordered Fisk to pay $1,250 in court costs and sentenced him to a year of court supervision. Fisk will also have to attend a victim-impact panel, drug and alcohol evaluations as well as substance abuse counseling. Fisk will have his drivers license reinstated as well, since prosecutors agreed that the arrested officers gave him inaccurate warning about refusing blood alcohol tests, which he did. Another one of Fisk’s attorneys said, “He realizes that kids look up to him, and he’s a role model“.
