Miss Las Cruces Resigns Title After Aggravated DWI
Miss Las Cruces Sarah J. Richardson has resigned her title as a Miss America candidate. She was arrested and charged with drunk driving after her PT Cruiser slammed into a light pole, which caused 1,700 people to lose power in their homes. Sarah Richardson is seen beaming a smile in her mugshot photo, but her statement of resignation offered an apology for her actions.
Her statement says, “I have officially resigned my title as Miss Las Cruces 2013. My actions are not congruous with the actions of a Miss America candidate, and I realize that at this time I must step back and reflect, prioritize my life and accept the consequences. I am very sincerely sorry for those that I have let down in this incident.”
Due to Richardson’s resignation, the first runner up of Las Cruces, Taylor Rey, has been awarded Miss Las Cruces 2013.
Sarah Richardson’s charge was upgraded to aggravated DWI. When the light pole was taken down, nearby hotels lost power too, and many guests were from out-of-town for New Mexico State University’s commencement ceremony. The hotel managers refunded thousands of dollars to hotel guests.
According to Alamogordo Daily News, the police report states that Richardson’s BAC was .16, but she told police she only had a 12-ounce beer and a 12-ounce margarita. Richardson stands at 5’2″ and weighs 115 pounds. Richardson will likely have her license suspended for 60 days and she will face fines and court costs for DWI. A conviction would go on her permanent criminal record.
