'American Pie' Actor Arrested for DUI in Los Angeles

Actor Chris Klein was stopped by the California Highway Patrol early Wednesday morning for suspicion of driving under the influence in LA. An officer stopped Klein on the 101 Freeway about 3:15 am. The 31-year old star of the ‘American Pie’ movies reportedly failed a field sobriety test and was arrested.

This is Klein’s second California DUI offense. He pleaded guilty in 2005 to two misdemeanor counts of drunk driving after registering a blood alcohol content of .20%. He received five years probation and was fined $1800 for that offense.

Goat Found in Trunk of Car at Virginia DUI Checkpoint

Last Friday evening, sheriff’s deputies conducting a sobriety checkpoint at the Bedford County-Campbell County line heard a knocking noise coming from the trunk of one of the vehicles. When the driver was asked what was in the trunk, she replied a goat.

Fiona Ann Enderdy claimed that transporting animals in the trunk of a vehicle was acceptable practice in the United Kingdom. She said that she had purchased the goat from a farmer to give to the four Kenyan men who were in the car.

An animal control officer who was working at the checkpoint said that the goat was panting heavily and the temperature in the trunk was quite high. The goat was given water and taken to the Bedford County pound. Enderdy was charged with cruelty to an animal and released.

The Virginia DUI checkpoint was conducted by the state police, three county sheriff’s departments and two local police departments. Nearly 15,000 vehicles passed through the checkpoint over a four hour period, resulting in three arrests for DUI in Virginia and one arrest for drugs.

Georgia Woman Charged With DUI After Dropping Son Off at School

Wednesday morning a Georgetown woman was arrested for driving under the influence in Georgia as she slipped in and out of consciousness after dropping her son off at summer school. About a half mile from the school, Barbara Thornton nearly struck another vehicle and a pole while pulling into a gas station parking lot. She then passed out in her car.

A Quitman County Sheriff’s deputy was able to shake Thornton awake but she was incoherent. She was unable to maintain her balance to perform field sobriety tests and she kept closing her eyes and falling asleep. Thornton said that she had taken medication before the incident. Because she refused to provide a blood or urine sample to test for drugs or alcohol, her driver’s license was suspended. She was booked at the Miller County Jail on charges of DUI in Georgia.

Thornton, 34, had been arrested for possession of cocaine last March and sentenced to probation.

Tougher Colorado DUI Laws to Begin Soon

New penalties are scheduled to go into effect for those arrested for driving under the influence in Colorado. Beginning July 1, 2010 those Colorado DUI offenders will face more jail time and additional public service.

A drunk driver could be sentenced up to 5 days in jail for a first offense. A second arrest will bring about a mandatory minimum 10 day jail sentence, and a third or subsequent offense would result in a mandatory minimum 60 day jail term. The new law removes the judge’s discretion in the case and is in response to reaction to an investigation that showed repeat offenders often received fairly light penalties. Currently, a judge can reduce a jail sentence for repeat offenders to as few as 6 days.

Those convicted of drunk driving in Colorado will also have to serve more public service hours and pay for their own drug or alcohol rehabilitation. Failure to undergo treatment could result in a additional time in jail.

The new law is intended to address the problems of chronic drinking and driving. It is hoped that getting help will reduce recidivism and possibly save lives.

Wrong Way Driver Plows Into Arizona DPS Car

A Department of Public Safety patrol car was struck by a drunk driver heading the wrong way on a major highway. Around 2:00 Wednesday morning Officer James Waltermire noticed headlights coming toward him on Loop 101 in Glendale. He activated his emergency lights and siren and began a zigzagging motion to get cars behind him to stop or slow down. The on-coming Ford pick-up truck hit the driver’s side of the DPS car, and despite causing extensive damage to both vehicles, continued driving for about 100 yards before coming to a stop. The truck even lost a tire during the wreck, which bounced into a Suburban. No one was injured in any of the involved vehicles.

The driver of the pick-up jumped out of his wrecked vehicle and fled on foot. Michael Chicharello was apprehended shortly after and officers initiated a drunk driving investigation. A preliminary breath test showed that Chicharello had a blood alcohol content of 0.252%, more than three times the legal limit for intoxication in Arizona.

Chicharello, 31, was booked for driving under the influence in Arizona, aggravated assault, endangerment, criminal damage and leaving the scene of an accident. Officer Waltermire, a five year veteran with the DPS, was roundly praised by the department spokesperson, saying his actions probably saved someone’s life.
