Gary Collins Arrested for California DUI Again

Gary Collins was stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence near Montecito, California around 9:15 Sunday night after reportedly crossing the center line and nearly hitting an oncoming police car. Collins refused to perform field sobriety tests though he did submit to a blood alcohol test. During the arrest, he told the officers he thought he was in the San Fernando Valley, which is nearly an hour and a half to the east. Collins was booked on charges of California DUI at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Collins pled no contest to a California drunk driving charge last year following an accident that left another motorist dead. The other driver was found to have caused the wreck by making an illegal left turn, so Collins was not charged with manslaughter. Collins admitted to being drunk however and he spent four days in jail and entered an alcohol rehab program. He was also placed on four-year probation, meaning that the recent DUI in Santa Barbara County may lead to a new jail sentence. Collins was found not guilty of DUI in Mississippi in 2002.

Hyundai Executive Extradited in California DUI Case

A fugitive who fled to South Korea following a 2005 crash that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist will be extradited to Orange County to face felony charges. Youn Bum Lee, 41, was arrested last December by South Korean officials on a warrant issued for the death of motorcyclist Ryan Dallas Cook. The US Justice Department and the FBI had been searching for Lee since the warrant was issued in 2007.

Lee was drinking with colleagues at a Korean restaurant in October 2005, and the group moved to a karaoke bar where more alcohol was consumed. Lee, a former Hyundai executive, climbed into a company issued black colored SUV around midnight and was involved in a single vehicle crash on the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana. The vehicle came to rest on a concrete barrier with no lights, and Cook, 23, slammed his motorcycle into the SUV and was then struck by other passing motorists. The next evening Lee was on a flight headed to Seoul, South Korea.

Legislators Proposed Harsher Penalties for Wyoming DUI

A House committee of the Wyoming legislature is about to debate two bills calling for an increase in penalties for drunk driving. One calls for an increase of the fine for first offense WY DUI from $750 to $1000. A second DUI conviction within five years would be filed as a high misdemeanor, with fines being raised from $750 to $3000 and the minimum jail sentence set at 60 days. Offenders would be given the opportunity to join alcohol treatment or a drug court to reduce the jail term. A third and fourth offense within seven years would call for a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison. A fifth Wyoming DUI within a lifetime would also result in a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison. Currently a fifth offense has to take place within five years to realize a $10,000 fine and only 2 years in prison.

The proposed legislation would count time between offense from the date of arrest for driving under the influence in Wyoming, rather than the date of conviction.

A second measure that also seeks to reduce drunk driving in Wyoming calls for reform of the DUI system, rather than increased penalties. The bill
