A Dayton man is in jail on charges of driving under the influence in Ohio after causing a chain reaction crash. Daniel Ray Morgan reportedly was not in control of his vehicle when he came out of an alley around 3:45 pm Thursday and struck a police cruiser. The impact caused the cop car to crash into a passing Ford Mustang.

When Morgan realized that he had hit a cop car, he tried to flee. An off-duty cop who happened to be in the area and a bystander were able to detain Morgan until he could be handcuffed.

The police officer in the vehicle and the driver of the Mustang were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Dayton police say that Morgan, 26, has been charged with Ohio DUI, driving without a license, and reckless driving.

Delaware Ohio Police Sgt. Mark Leatherman has been suspended from the department for failing to investigate an incident of drinking and driving. The drunk driving suspect, Ashley Glazer, had struck two parked vehicles in her parent’s neighborhood in the early morning hours of June 16, 2010. Glazer’s father is a fellow police officer.

Leatherman failed to administer a field sobriety test even though Glazer’s mother told a police dispatcher that her daughter had been drinking before the crash. An internal investigation found that Leatherman did not fully investigate the possibility of driving under the influence as a professional favor. The police investigation of the incident was launched only after residents whose vehicles were damaged wrote letters to the local paper and to city officials wanting to know why Glazer was not tested for intoxication even though the police report said alcohol was a suspected factor.

Leatherman was suspended for five days without pay. Glazer was cited for failure to control a motor vehicle. She was fined $130 and had two penalty points applied to her driving record.

A Southern California woman was killed in a roll-over accident on Interstate 210 around 2:00 am Thursday. She reportedly was hurrying home to get ready for a mandatory DUI class later that day.

The California Highway Patrol says Lidia Kopach had stopped at a bar and consumed two vodka drinks and shared two pitchers of beer before getting on the highway. She lost control of her vehicle and rolled over. Kopach was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger who was slightly injured in the accident said that Kopach wanted to get home so she could get some sleep before attending the court-ordered class. He also related that he asked Kopach to slow down several times before the crash.

Kopach, 24, was required to take the alcohol awareness classes following a September 2009 conviction for driving under the influence in California.

A Hollywood, Florida teen has been charged with driving under the influence after a single vehicle crash that killed his best friend. According to the Florida State Patrol, on August 27 Roee Chai Ben-Amor, 18, lost control of his 2007 Kia Optima on an interstate highway and struck a pole. The car burst into flames. The lone passenger in the car, Samuel Gargir, 18, died at the scene. Ben-Amor survived with a broken leg.

After the return of toxicology tests, Ben-Amor was charged with Florida DUI, DUI manslaughter and DUI manslaughter impairment.

Ben-Amor made his first court appearance on Wednesday, September 15, and the judge ordered him to post $60,000 bond and to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. A relative purchased an airline ticket to Israel for the young man, though it is claimed that it was done without Ben-Amor’s knowledge and that he had no intention of using the ticket.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Department is reporting the Washington DUI arrest of a man who crashed two of his own cars and was stopped while driving a tow truck during an apparent effort to retrieve the wrecked vehicles.

On Monday night, Tommy Ryser, 54, crashed his truck into a utility pole. He left that vehicle and got into his wife’s Volkswagen, only to crash into a guardrail. Police were investigating one of the wrecks when Ryser pulled up on the scene in a third vehicle – a tow truck he owns. Police noticed Ryser’s bloodied forehead and made a traffic stop.

Ryser was booked on three counts of driving under the influence in Washington.

Police in Greeley report a man being busted twice for driving under the influence in Colorado. The second time was after the suspect stole a patrol car.

Adam Segura, 32, was stooped for speeding around 1:30 pm on September 9, and the officer noticed several signs of drinking, including slurred speech and an odor of alcohol. Segura admitted to drinking and he was arrested for suspicion of DUI in Colorado, handcuffed from behind and placed in a squad car. While the arresting officer and aback-up officer were interviewing witnesses, Segura managed to slip out of the cuffs, undo the seat belt and took off in the cruiser. Police pursued Segura for about a mile before he stopped near the entrance to Greeley Mall.

A police spokesperson says it is conducting an investigation but doubts the officer violated any department procedure, noting that there was no cage between the front and back seats. The vehicle was valued at over $20,000 and the special police equipment at another $10,000.

Segura’s blood alcohol content registered 0.26%, more than three times the legal limit for impairment in Colorado. He was booked at the Weld County Jail on a total of 12 charges, including two counts of drunk driving in Colorado, escape, speeding and aggravated vehicle theft.

Sheriff’s deputies in Madison County report the arrest of a man for DUI in Alabama after he crashed into a patrol car. A deputy had pulled over a driver with outstanding warrants around 1:00 am and a back-up patrol car parked behind them. Hernandez Donaciano then drove his Nissan Pathfinder into the rear of one of the patrol cars, ramming it into the other.

The deputies were not in their vehicles at the time of the crash, and no one was injured. One sheriff’s department vehicle was totaled and the other received minor damage.

Donaciano refused to submit to a breath test though he failed a field sobriety test and was booked on charges of driving under the influence in Alabama. He was also charged with three counts of reckless endangerment, driving without a license, failure to have insurance, violating an open container law and for failure to provide safe space for a stopped law enforcement vehicle.

It was determined that Donaciano, 51, is in the country illegally, and the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement requested he be held in jail pending additional charges.

The state Department of Public Safety reports that an 18-day campaign resulted in 1,775 arrests for driving while intoxicated in Minnesota. Between August 20 and September 6 a total of 332 law enforcement agencies across the state conducted the heightened DWI enforcement effort.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has released preliminary numbers from the ‘100 Days of Heat’ anti-drunk driving campaign.
