Yuma Police Get A High Tech Police Car to Combat Drunk Driver's in Arizona
The Yuma Police Department has a new vehicle for its fight against motorists suspected of driving drunk in Arizona. What appears to be just another police cruiser is actually a specialized vehicle containing state-of-the-art equipment. While its primary function will be to DUI enforcement in Yuma County, the vehicle will also be used in traffic enforcement, looking for speeders, red light runners and aggressive drivers.
The cruiser has emergency lights mounted along the inside, top edge of the front windshield rather than the roof, a computer with two monitors, special lights for side visibility, a digital mobile video system linked to two cameras for recording traffic stops arrests and a Doppler radar. The radar allows officers to scan traffic in both directions simultaneously and it automatically identifies the fastest cars in its range.
The drivers of the vehicle are also unique. The designated DUI team has been trained to draw blood samples to check blood alcohol content of suspected drunk drivers, and are trained in drug recognition.
The cruiser was paid for through a $40,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

New Port Richey Police Officer Arrested for DUI in Florida
A New Port Richey police officer is facing charges of Driving Under the Influence in Pasco County, Florida following a hit and run accident. Christopher Sutherlin, who was off duty at the time, reportedly slammed into the back end of a 2005 Ford pick-up truck with his 2006 Nissan pick-up around 3:00 am and then tried to flee the scene. The first official state memorial marker for an Illinois DUI victim was erected in the north Chicago suburbs. The blue sign is a legal substitution for homemade signs often placed at the scene of a deadly drunk driving accident. The signs urge motorists not to drive under the influence in Illinois and can honor a specific DUI victim.

Rockies Pitcher Charged with Florida DUI in Tampa
Luis Vizcaino, relief pitcher for the Denver Rockies baseball team, was arrested for driving under the influence in Tampa, Florida. Vizcaino was spotted driving 71 mph in a 45 zone around 1:30 am Monday morning. When officers initiated a traffic stop, he abruptly stopped his red Cadillac sedan in the outside lane. Police detected alcohol and Vizcaino admitted to having consumed two alcoholic drinks. His blood alcohol content registered .084% and .087% after two breath tests. The legal limit for intoxication in the state of Florida is .080%. He was booked on charges of Florida DUI at the Hillsborough County Jail.
Vizcaino is from the Dominican Republic, and he resides in St. Petersburg. He has a career record of 34-27 with a 4.34 ERA. He has pitched for six teams during his 10-year career. Last December, Vizcaino signed a two year, $2 million contract with the Rockies.

Custom Van to Fight DWI in New Hampshire
A coordinator with the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency announced the purchase of a specialized van that will act as mobile booking station. The agency provided funds for the $450,000 vehicle that will be used to expedite the processing and booking of motorists suspected of driving while intoxicated in New Hampshire.
The customized van has two jail cells, a bathroom, breath testing equipment, computer and room for a bail bondsman and a drug recognition person. The vehicle will be deployed at sobriety checkpoints across the state, beginning in the Portsmouth area on November 7. The intent is to reduce the time it takes to process an arrest for drunk driving by doing it at the checkpoint. The HSA said the van could also be utilized in times of emergency as a mobile command center.
Local law enforcement agencies will only have to pay for the gas for the van, so it is anticipated that more communities will request its use. One police chief says that the objective is not to catch people but to change people

Inspector Fakes Breathalyzer Maintenance
A Department of Public Safety contractor failed to inspect breath testing equipment as required by law, and then faked maintenance records to indicate that she had. As a result, at least 2,6000 arrests for driving while intoxicated in the Houston area are in question.
Texas law requires that breath testing equipment be calibrated once a month to ensure accuracy. According to Houston DWI defense attorney Dane Johnson, blood alcohol content is a key piece of evidence in the prosecution

Police Officer Charged With Minnesota DWI
An off-duty Minneapolis police officer was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Minnesota Tuesday.
Around 7:00 pm, police were alerted to a suspected drunk driver by another motorist. Jeffrey Pennaz was stopped in a parking lot in the west suburbs of the Twin Cities. The investigating officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol, and a breath test revealed a blood alcohol content two and a half times the legal limit.
Pennaz had two children in the vehicle when he was stopped. He was booked on suspicion of Minnesota DWI at the Hennepin County jail. Gross misdemeanor charges are expected to be filed against Pennaz today.

Lindsay Lohan Sued Over DUI Ride
