On Friday, August 11th, one Gainesville woman made a bad decision that not only could have taken her own life, but the lives of 8 children as well. Lawanda Lowery-Gale, 32, was arrested after she side-swiped another vehicle with her Kia van while driving drunk. 6 of the 8 children in the vehicle were her own while the other 2 were nieces. According to police, Gale was exhibiting signs of intoxication such as slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and had an odor of alcohol. After performing poorly on several field sobriety tests, officers gave Gale a breathalyzer test as well and found her blood alcohol content to be .166%, more than double Florida’s legal limit of .08%.

Reports state that Gale was on her way to a local bar called “Fubar” when the accident occurred around 9:50 pm. Gale has been cited in the past for refusing to submit to an alcohol test in addition to having her driver’s license suspended 5 times for prior offenses. The estimated cost of damages in the accident exceed $1,000 and fortunately no one was hurt. The children riding in her Kia at the time of the accident were aged 10 months to 14 years old. Gale was charged with driving while intoxicated(DUI), driving with a suspended license and 8 counts of child neglect.
