Pregnant Repeat DUI Offender Arrested for DUI

sarah rickettsSarah Ricketts, a repeat DUI offender who is six months pregnant, was arrested for DUI again on May 20, 2013. The incident occurred at 9:45 p.m. in Vanderburgh County, Indiana when police observed the repeat DUI offender driving at 73 mph in a 50 mph zone. When the officer began interrogating Ricketts, he found that the vehicle had a strong odor of alcohol coming from it and saw an open vodka bottle sitting inside.

Police also found that Ricketts, who is six months pregnant, had a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of .19%, more than double the legal limit of .08%. Ricketts was then arrested and taken to Vanderburgh County Jail. Since Ricketts is a repeat DUI offender, she has been charged with driving while intoxicated with a prior DUI conviction, which is a Class D felony. Women who drink during pregnancy may not realize the negative impact it can have on an unborn child. According to the CDC, drinking alcohol during pregnancy could result in the baby being born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs), resulting in poor memory, physical deformities, and problems concerning the heart, kidneys or bones to name a few.
