Mel Gibson Arrested for DUI in California

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office released information stating that Mel Gibson was arrested July 28 in Malibu, California. Gibson has been charged with Driving Under the Influence (California DUI).

According to sheriff’s office spokesman Steve Whitmore, the Academy Award winning actor and director was stopped 2:30 Friday morning on Highway 1 – Pacific Coast Highway. The arresting officers reported that
Gibson was driving his Lexus automobile at an "excessively fast speed." L.A. County officers placed Gibson under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence (California DUI) after administering a field sobriety test.
The results of that test are not available. Whitmore said that Gibson was charged with a misdemeanor California DUI and released on $5,000 bond.

Mr. Gibson (50) was not immediately available for comment, but Saturday released a statement of regret for his actions and statements made during the DUI arrest.  Gibson also stated that he has battled alcoholism before.

Mel Gibson acted in the ‘Lethal Weapon’ series, won Best Picture Oscar for "Braveheart" and produced and directed "The Passion of the Christ." His latest movie, "Apocalypto" is due to be released in December 2006.
