The SXSW music festival held annually in Austin, Texas draws bands and music fans from around the world. The activities start early and go late into the night, with alcohol flowing freely at the club venues.
While most festival attendees plan to rely on safe rides, taxis and designated drivers, the Austin police department is doubling their street patrols looking for motorists suspected of drunk driving in Austin. The city averages 75 Texas DWI arrests on a weekend. The total was slightly higher than average during the first weekend of SXSW activities.
The additional Austin DWI patrols will be in effect through Sunday, the last day of the festival.
