Austin Police Department Releases Holiday DWI Arrests

austin dwiThe Austin Police Department has released the results of their “Home for the Holidays” initiative that sought to keep drivers safe from the hazards of drunk driving during the busy holiday season. The initiative consisted of more than 600 officers and 5,000 extra work hours throughout Austin for traffic enforcement. According to Austin PD, approximately 1,800 tickets for hazardous driving were issued in addition to 16 felony and 82 misdemeanor arrests.

The operation that focuses on keeping drunk drivers off the roads resulted in 10 additional DWI arrests. The Austin program is also part of a larger effort throughout Texas that started on Thanksgiving and lasted through January 1, 2013 and was made possible through a grant supplied by the Texas Department of Education. Throughout the years, these Don’t Drink and Drive campaigns have resulted in thousands of DWI arrests and can be attributed to a decrease in fatal drunk driving related crashes.
