Tyrann Mathieu May Be Undraftable for NFL Due To Drug Arrest

Tyrann Mathieu, former LSU cornerback football player and a one-time Heisman Trophy finalist, may have lost his chance to play college football again and of someday playing with an NFL team. Mathieu, better known as “Honey Badger,” and several of his former LSU teammates were arrested last Thursday for possession of marijuana charges. It was stated that they arrived at Mathieu’s apartment complex and “couldn’t figure out how to work a security gate and drew enough attention that it warranted a call to police who smelled marijuana and arrested the four former players on a variety of charges…after obtaining permission to search and finding  a marijuana grinder, digital scale, and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana…” They were apprehended and taken to a Baton Rouge, Louisiana jail.

Sources stated that Mathieu’s charge was a “first offense of simple possession.”  In August 2011, Mathieu was kicked off the LSU football team for failing a drug test and academic failure. Due to this, it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to play again with LSU. More importantly, his current situation might affect his chances of participating in April’s NFL draft.

On the other hand, other sources claim that “it’s certain that Mathieu will come into the NFL under the watchful eye of the league…it is the league that doles out four-game suspensions for positive marijuana tests—the same punishment given to first-time steroid users.”
