3 Doors Down Bassist Arrested For DUI In Fatal Crash

Todd Harrell, a bassist with rock band 3 Doors Down, was charged with vehicular homicide after a fatal DUI crash on April 19, 2013. Harrell, who is one of the founding members of 3 Doors Down, was speeding on a Nashville highway when he clipped a pickup truck, causing it to swerve out of control before striking a guardrail and overturning. The driver in the truck, has been identified as 47 year old Paul Howard Shoulders, was killed as a result of the accident. Police believe Shoulders was not wearing a seat belt during the accident and was thrown from his vehicle. Shoulders was later pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

After striking Shoulders’ truck, Harrells’ Cadillac hit a retaining wall and came to a stop about a quarter mile away. Police performed a series of field sobriety tests on Harrell before he admitted to having consumed a combination of hard cider and prescription drugs. Police then obtained a warrant to take a blood sample from Harrell and placed him under arrest. When police proceeded to search Harrell at the booking room later that night, they found a plastic bag containing Xanax, Oxymorphone and Oxycodone pills and charged him with bringing controlled substances into a jail. Harrell was held on a $100,000 bond after the arrest. 3 Doors Down issued a statement on their website after the incident saying, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time“.
