Police Chief Charged with DUI in Virginia

Top cop arrested for drunk driving in Alexandria with BAC over twice the legal limit.

The chief of the Alexandria Police Department was arrested Saturday night on suspicion of driving under the influence in Virginia. Chief David P. Baker was involved in an accident around 11:00 pm while off-duty but driving a city issued unmarked vehicle. He was found to have a blood alcohol content of .19%, more than twice the legal limit for intoxication.

The Alexandria city manager ordered an internal investigation, and Baker was placed on administrative leave.

Baker, 58, has nearly 40 years experience with law enforcement, working for the District of Columbia police and then the Alexandria department. He was second in command for 16 years before being made the chief of police in 2006. There reportedly no other incidents on his record and he is highly respected.

Baker was arrested for drunk driving in Virginia and booked along normal procedures. He was released with no bail and has his first court date this Wednesday. Because his BAC was above .15%, Virginia DUI laws stipulate a minimum of five days in jail if he is convicted.
