New National Drunk Driving Campaign - Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will unveil its new drunk driving slogan - "Over the Limit. Under Arrest."

NHTSA-DWI/DUIOn August 16 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will unveil its new drunk driving slogan. Titled ‘Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.’, it replaces the current ‘You Drink & Drive. You Lose.’ campaign.

The new slogan was developed with direction from the American Beverage Institute (ABI). While emphasizing that it is committed to reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road, the ABI noted that the previous slogan did not adequately reflect the fact that responsible drinking and driving is legal in all fifty states. They support the new campaign, with ABI Executive Director John Doyle saying it "helps send a firm but fair message that distinguishes between drunk driving and drinking responsibly. The new slogan recognizes the legitimacy of the 40 million adults who drink responsibly and legally prior to driving."

The American Beverage Institute is a restaurant trade association dedicated to the responsible serving of alcohol to adults. It recommends that the new slogan be coupled with an increase in rolling DWI/DUI patrols, citing that strategy as the most effective in catching repeat DWI/DUI offenders and those who abuse alcohol and drive.

Standard Field Sobriety Test expert Cpl. Jon Gonzales with the Los Alamos, New Mexico Police confirms that "roving patrols are an effective way to catch alcohol abusers because officers can cover a wide spread area throughout the community. DWI/DUI checkpoints are highly visible and once the word gets out, citizens that have been drinking often take alternate routes to avoid the checkpoint."

NHTSA considered a number of slogans before deciding on the new campaign. Doyle offered praise for the selection of ‘Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.’ as it "is respectful of responsible drinkers while sending a strong enforcement message that is cognizant of the law and clearly targets drunk drivers."

It is the drivers arrested for DWI/DUI with blood alcohol content (BAC) well in excess of the legal limit of .08 that the NHTSA says constitutes the root of the drunk driving problem.

I am upset @ your commercial because you are just targeting men. Men are not the only drunk drivers out there!
Posted by julie at 2008-12-31 17:47
why are there no women being arrested for drunk driving in your commercials?

is this an anti-male, male-hating bunch of women that are running your commercials or simply prone to "male bashing"?

there are plenty of female drunk drivers. I know, firsthand, my mother was picked up 3 times for drunk driving. that's why my dad divorced her, she was unsafe andd dangerous and our dad didn't want her hurting us.

why don't you quit your male bashing and show the other side of the coin, and that is, women are picked up every day and night for drunk driving.

Julie? I think it's safe to assume you're a woman! GREAT comment!

it is very refreshing to see an obviously intelligent woman
call those BULLIES named "mothers" on their sexest ad!

it's become clear that MADD's motivations and goals are much more complex than they're claimed to be,with "drunk driving" surely not being the REAL concern for them.

thank you for standing up for the men in this country who are constantly suffering from all kinds of bashing and undermining which is bound to cause more rift and dysfunction in our society.

Obviously a male-bashing ad.

Question is: What are you going to do about it? Suggestion:

Sit down and write a Letter to the Editor of your local newspaper, and let him know how you feel. Take your time, follow up with a phone call to the Editor. Chances are, they will publish it.

Something else you could do, is write to your Senator or Congressman. They do read the letters.

Do this, and you will make a difference!
Thanks

I thought the (we will Find You was pretty funny) even if you have 1 drink and YOUR not drunk or buzzed, Your BAC says you are, your in allot of trouble. cuz ya aint going to fight it the cops make damn sure of it.tolerance does not count anymore. If they even smell beer, wine , booze on your breath and you are not drunk they can and now some states they will agaisnt you take your BAC . or blood. Just one drink folks. a great way for the state to make money huh, and they rake it in to. no matter if your a man or woman. In my little town its there way they make money. But for some they get blasted off there butts yea they do deserve a DWI, So because of this allot of Bars and any place that serves is putting in a bac machine . charges 1 dollar to use and if you are over the limit you get a free ride home. Dont let them make money off of you and take responsibility. It is now o tolerance anymore:)

Dear Dave,

The abbreviated slang term for advertisement is "ad" not "add". "Your not drunk" should be "you're not drunk" and there was no reason to put "your" in all caps. Also, "allot" is not a word, and neither is "cuz" or "ya". Please us "because" and "you". And then there is this, "and now some states they will agaisnt you take your BAC". What the hell is that supposed to mean? And it just keeps going. So many mistakes, random punctuation and capitalization mistakes it is sad.

I agree they are targeting men

although I understand entirely about females are known for drunk driving as well, stats have proven that men are more prone to drunk drive than women; which is why most drunk driving commercials are directed towards men.Its not about being sexist or male bashing. Its about how often people lost their lives to an individual who had one too many but still felt that they can drive. And most of the times when the police and ambulance people are picking up the bodies, the one who was driving the car is man.
There are a few commericials out there which shows women wanting to drive while intoxicated and I heard stories of girls doing it and thank God they are still alive today to tell their stories.
But either way, the point is regardless of what the commericial depicts, the message should be what you get out of it; DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE
Posted by Robin at 2009-06-03 22:36
Stats do not tell all. When a woman is intoxicated, she is more likely to be escorted home than when a man is intoxicated. If both are intoxicated, there is a tendency for this to place him on the road even longer than if he were simply driving himself home. Because after he drives her to her destination, there is a good chance that he then drives himself to his final destination.

It's easy to dismiss when you're not the one being discriminated against. If both men and women are killing people while driving drunk, it's sexist--particularly for an organization like MADD much less a FEDERAL AGENCY such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)--to portray males as the source of the problem.

Using your logic, we should make African Americans the focus of our anti-crime efforts, as they represent the highest statistical percentage of convicted criminals in our nation. Brinks and ADT commercials should advertise how well their systems deter blacks from breaking into your home. Since, you know, more blacks are incarcerated for B&Es than whites. But why stop there? Why not blame women for teen pregnancies--after all, you don't see any pregnant boys in our high schools now do you?

Considering MADD's sexually biased mindset, it's no wonder that the number of female DUI cases is escalating so rapidly.

If this commercial was showing how the average American is doing a good job of calling the police on drunk drivers, and the only ones calling were white, the NAACP would be on that that white on rice (pun intended). Al Sharpton would be saying how the United States was still in the times of racism and white people need to respect the feelings of blacks. Well frankly, I'm tired of that crap. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, I want to inject my opposition of this commercial and I would like to see it changed. Racism CAN go two ways whether people want to see it or not.
Posted by Jon at 2010-12-20 03:23
If your rational is correct that means we can target black men for anti crime commercials???? So we can generalize, but only if its against a bunch of white guys. Go fuck yourself.
Posted by PJman at 2009-09-06 14:21
Not only does it show ONLY MEN drive drunk out of not two or three actors but like 6 damn ACTING SUSPECTS paid by the commercial, but it shows ONLY WHITE MEN drive drunk. What is the percentage of ALL stereotypes of DUIs of the latest year, say 2008, white men, white women, black men, black women, asian men, asian women, latin men, latin women, other race men, other race women - that is 10 categories. For ALL CRIMINALS at RANDOM to be of ON GROUP of people the odds woudl have to be over 99%!!!!!! You are going to tell me that by odds of statistics that over 99% of DUI busts are WHITE MEN and MIDDLE AGED - B.S. I have a math degree and know well statistics this ad is bigoted when you make ALL actors of one type of people. I am calling on the news media to show the bigotry of this commercial!!!!
Posted by Douglas at 2010-08-27 10:14
I agree. I am really sick of the excessive PC agenda of this commercial series portraying only Caucasians as drunks, and they also conveniently have a minority police officer pulling them over!

Everyone in opposition to this commercial should call the NHTSA, The Ad Council as well as your local congressman/woman. Perhaps a Class-Action Lawsuit should be initiated as well if they aren't pulled.

MADD. An orginization made up solely of females targeting men as the only ones that drive drunk. This country is allways delivering a message to be diverse. So why not be diverse by showing a female getting busted or a black male or female? Well.... we all know why they dont show Blacks being busted and its because of the NAACP. BUT... What puzzles me is why they refuse to show a female doing anything wrong? Especially the White female! These commercials are totally sexist. What is MADD's answer to this nonsence?

Rob,

I agree with you. It seems that the current modus operandi is to try to curb drunk driving by using the tactic of embarrassment but not by trying to find a better way to cure the problem. Education is the key. Not costly embarrassing ads on TV showing a guys car door opening with the whole inside of the car emptying out like a giant glass of Sangria with the fruit slices and everything. What were they drinking when they came up with that one. How about the motorcycle driver opening up his helmet visor and all of the alcohol pouring out. This is more like a comedy than a beneficial message to prevent drunk driving. Why don't they get proactive on some better ways to educate people as to the ills of drunk driving. I use to be a drunk driver and by the grace of God I never injured or killed anyone but it is rehabilitation and education that turned my life around. I am against drunk driving as much as M.A.D.D. is but I just differ on my opinion as to what efforts should be used to correct the problem. I really don't think showing anyone no matter what race or gender puts a dent in the drunk driving problem. They need to go back and rethink what they are trying to accomplish. M.A.D.D. members are reacting more with emotion than with logic. Why aren't they attacking the alcohol industry. Anyone who drinks and who is also a driver of a vehicle, definitely on occasion gets behind the wheel of a car and drives while under the influence of alcohol. I don't think there is any doubt. It's simply become a game of chance as to whether they get caught or kill or maime someone in the process. Stricter DUI laws have not lowered the death and injury statistics either. We really need to quit thinking with our asses and start using our heads to figure out a better way. Just maybe EDUCATION and a more effective remedy by allowing people who can prove they don't drink anymore be allowed to have hardship licenses rather than committing people to a life of no drivers license because of a lapse in judgement.

In this world of so called equal opportunity. It appears that some have not received that memo yet. If you want to be fair, why don't they show black men, black women, and other minorities getting pulled over by police or at random check points. Women are getting more DWI"s than in the past. THIS COMMERCIAL IS A BLANTANT EXAMPLE OF DESCRIMINATION!!!

“Drive drunk get busted”

I see this billboard every day on my drive home along with the countless commercials about over the limit under arrest. I find this appalling. The message being sent is that your biggest fear should be getting pulled over with a BAC of .08 or above.

I don’t find this message to be accurate. People break the law every day; they just find ways to avoid getting caught. For instance, a man is at a bar with friends celebrating a birthday. By the end of the night he gets in his car to drive home. He knows if he were to be pulled over he is well above the .08 and would lose his license. Instead of going home his usual route he takes back roads to avoid the police. Only problem is he is drunk and disoriented and doesn’t know these roads as well. Back roads are windy and there is less lighting. Being under the influence, he’s not aware of how fast he is going. There is a sharp curve in the road and he’s going too fast. He loses control, goes up over the curb and flips the car hitting a tree. The car comes to rest on someone’s front lawn. You know the rest of the story.

I think that if people were shown the reality of the carnage, the toll on families and friends, and all the collateral damage, it will have more impact. To lose your license is one thing, to take someone’s life or lose your own is another. There are too many of us who have been affected for us not to expose the real consequences of this act. The message, “Drunk Driving Kills” is the message that needs to be prominent in these ads, on these billboards and taught in school.

We need to build a society that understands the consequences of drugs and alcohol. Not just the small consequence of losing your license but the devastating never fading consequence of dying from acting recklessly.

Drunk Driving Kills
Please Don’t Do It

Thank you

Lauren,

I'm not sure which state you live in, but here in MN state troopers travel from school to school and talk with students in drivers education.
They talk with the kids and show them a VERY graphics video of kids (and adults) mangled in dui related crashes. The video also incorporates interviews of victims who survived as well as those responsible for the crash.

As with any kind of advertising, you need to target different audiences, with different mediums and messages.

But just wanted to let you know that they do use "Drunk Driving Kills" messages in MN schools.

It says over the limit under arrest. Okay I get that but what I don't understand is that if you're pulled over and you have had something to drink but you're not over the limit don't they technically have to let you go.????
Posted by sham at 2010-07-19 13:19
THIS IS ANOTHER GOVERNMENT LIE. THEY SHOULD BE ARRESTED FOR FALSE ADVERTISING. I WAS PULLED OVER AND MY BAC LEVEL WAS WELL BELOW THE LIMIT AND I WAS STILL ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH A DWI.
Posted by Robert C. Pike at 2010-09-03 15:18
This advertisement targeting men who drink and drive is discriminatory on its face. It paints a picture which ignores that the legal limit differs in many states and paints a picture that person arrested for DWIA/DUI's are all drunks.

Driving of a vehicle under the influence of doctor prescribed prescription meds can and will also be arrested for DWIA/DUI. Finally your organization should be contribution funds for ads that call for the arrest of speeders, and other distracted drivers such as anyone who uses a cell phone while driving, puts on makeup, communicates with a passenger, changes a radio station, or tries to hush up their kids.

These actions cause a thousands of more deaths and injuries in car crashes than folks who are under the influence. You guys gotta get a pair, if you want your industry to survive the prohibition campaign to ban drinking completely across the United States.

We the people are not going to put up with this revenue raising irrational behavior by a bunch of sissified citified wimps and their paid police robots.

It seems as if I am not the only individual that thinks this commercial is garbage. Yeah, garbage. This is worse than the "click it or ticket" ad.

Everyone has already noted the lack of a female drunk. Just like farts, they do not drink either.

I will take it to the next level. In a normal, politically correct, commercial; there is always a token oriental, black, American Indian, etc. Not in this ad. There seems to be a dude that has a shred of black in him. However, the producers ensure that there is a black COP.

This only proves that diversity and inclusion only works for women and minorities. If I only get angry and spiteful responses, I will count myself lucky. I will prepare to get firebombed by the fanatical busy bodies.

4 drivers pulled over , alcohol flows out from the opened windows, 4 white males are evil drunk pigs - almost as bad as the old Wamu commercials - when will reverse discrimination end ? Are there not any white males with voices left on Madison Ave.

I feel sorry for the parents who lose their children due to careless people driving while they came out of a bar! Do you know how many people die each year because of this??? If only people could take the keys away from the drunk person until he can walk agian. It would help from killikng men women and children. It would also help if there could be a sign everywhere that says: STOP DRINKING AND DRIVING IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE AND OTHERS. HELP ME BY TAKING MY KEYS AWAY WHEN YOU SEE ME STAGGER AND FALL! YOU CAN HELP SAVE A LIFE TOO.
