New National Drunk Driving Campaign - Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will unveil its new drunk driving slogan - "Over the Limit. Under Arrest."

NHTSA-DWI/DUIOn August 16 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will unveil its new drunk driving slogan. Titled ‘Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.’, it replaces the current ‘You Drink & Drive. You Lose.’ campaign.

The new slogan was developed with direction from the American Beverage Institute (ABI). While emphasizing that it is committed to reducing the number of drunk drivers on the road, the ABI noted that the previous slogan did not adequately reflect the fact that responsible drinking and driving is legal in all fifty states. They support the new campaign, with ABI Executive Director John Doyle saying it "helps send a firm but fair message that distinguishes between drunk driving and drinking responsibly. The new slogan recognizes the legitimacy of the 40 million adults who drink responsibly and legally prior to driving."

The American Beverage Institute is a restaurant trade association dedicated to the responsible serving of alcohol to adults. It recommends that the new slogan be coupled with an increase in rolling DWI/DUI patrols, citing that strategy as the most effective in catching repeat DWI/DUI offenders and those who abuse alcohol and drive.

Standard Field Sobriety Test expert Cpl. Jon Gonzales with the Los Alamos, New Mexico Police confirms that "roving patrols are an effective way to catch alcohol abusers because officers can cover a wide spread area throughout the community. DWI/DUI checkpoints are highly visible and once the word gets out, citizens that have been drinking often take alternate routes to avoid the checkpoint."

NHTSA considered a number of slogans before deciding on the new campaign. Doyle offered praise for the selection of ‘Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest.’ as it "is respectful of responsible drinkers while sending a strong enforcement message that is cognizant of the law and clearly targets drunk drivers."

It is the drivers arrested for DWI/DUI with blood alcohol content (BAC) well in excess of the legal limit of .08 that the NHTSA says constitutes the root of the drunk driving problem.

I am upset @ your commercial because you are just targeting men. Men are not the only drunk drivers out there!

why are there no women being arrested for drunk driving in your commercials?

is this an anti-male, male-hating bunch of women that are running your commercials or simply prone to "male bashing"?

there are plenty of female drunk drivers. I know, firsthand, my mother was picked up 3 times for drunk driving. that's why my dad divorced her, she was unsafe andd dangerous and our dad didn't want her hurting us.

why don't you quit your male bashing and show the other side of the coin, and that is, women are picked up every day and night for drunk driving.

Julie? I think it's safe to assume you're a woman! GREAT comment!

it is very refreshing to see an obviously intelligent woman
call those BULLIES named "mothers" on their sexest ad!

it's become clear that MADD's motivations and goals are much more complex than they're claimed to be,with "drunk driving" surely not being the REAL concern for them.

thank you for standing up for the men in this country who are constantly suffering from all kinds of bashing and undermining which is bound to cause more rift and dysfunction in our society.

although I understand entirely about females are known for drunk driving as well, stats have proven that men are more prone to drunk drive than women; which is why most drunk driving commercials are directed towards men.Its not about being sexist or male bashing. Its about how often people lost their lives to an individual who had one too many but still felt that they can drive. And most of the times when the police and ambulance people are picking up the bodies, the one who was driving the car is man.
There are a few commericials out there which shows women wanting to drive while intoxicated and I heard stories of girls doing it and thank God they are still alive today to tell their stories.
But either way, the point is regardless of what the commericial depicts, the message should be what you get out of it; DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE

Stats do not tell all. When a woman is intoxicated, she is more likely to be escorted home than when a man is intoxicated. If both are intoxicated, there is a tendency for this to place him on the road even longer than if he were simply driving himself home. Because after he drives her to her destination, there is a good chance that he then drives himself to his final destination.

It's easy to dismiss when you're not the one being discriminated against. If both men and women are killing people while driving drunk, it's sexist--particularly for an organization like MADD much less a FEDERAL AGENCY such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)--to portray males as the source of the problem.

Using your logic, we should make African Americans the focus of our anti-crime efforts, as they represent the highest statistical percentage of convicted criminals in our nation. Brinks and ADT commercials should advertise how well their systems deter blacks from breaking into your home. Since, you know, more blacks are incarcerated for B&Es than whites. But why stop there? Why not blame women for teen pregnancies--after all, you don't see any pregnant boys in our high schools now do you?

Considering MADD's sexually biased mindset, it's no wonder that the number of female DUI cases is escalating so rapidly.

Not only does it show ONLY MEN drive drunk out of not two or three actors but like 6 damn ACTING SUSPECTS paid by the commercial, but it shows ONLY WHITE MEN drive drunk. What is the percentage of ALL stereotypes of DUIs of the latest year, say 2008, white men, white women, black men, black women, asian men, asian women, latin men, latin women, other race men, other race women - that is 10 categories. For ALL CRIMINALS at RANDOM to be of ON GROUP of people the odds woudl have to be over 99%!!!!!! You are going to tell me that by odds of statistics that over 99% of DUI busts are WHITE MEN and MIDDLE AGED - B.S. I have a math degree and know well statistics this ad is bigoted when you make ALL actors of one type of people. I am calling on the news media to show the bigotry of this commercial!!!!

MADD. An orginization made up solely of females targeting men as the only ones that drive drunk. This country is allways delivering a message to be diverse. So why not be diverse by showing a female getting busted or a black male or female? Well.... we all know why they dont show Blacks being busted and its because of the NAACP. BUT... What puzzles me is why they refuse to show a female doing anything wrong? Especially the White female! These commercials are totally sexist. What is MADD's answer to this nonsence?

Rob,

I agree with you. It seems that the current modus operandi is to try to curb drunk driving by using the tactic of embarrassment but not by trying to find a better way to cure the problem. Education is the key. Not costly embarrassing ads on TV showing a guys car door opening with the whole inside of the car emptying out like a giant glass of Sangria with the fruit slices and everything. What were they drinking when they came up with that one. How about the motorcycle driver opening up his helmet visor and all of the alcohol pouring out. This is more like a comedy than a beneficial message to prevent drunk driving. Why don't they get proactive on some better ways to educate people as to the ills of drunk driving. I use to be a drunk driver and by the grace of God I never injured or killed anyone but it is rehabilitation and education that turned my life around. I am against drunk driving as much as M.A.D.D. is but I just differ on my opinion as to what efforts should be used to correct the problem. I really don't think showing anyone no matter what race or gender puts a dent in the drunk driving problem. They need to go back and rethink what they are trying to accomplish. M.A.D.D. members are reacting more with emotion than with logic. Why aren't they attacking the alcohol industry. Anyone who drinks and who is also a driver of a vehicle, definitely on occasion gets behind the wheel of a car and drives while under the influence of alcohol. I don't think there is any doubt. It's simply become a game of chance as to whether they get caught or kill or maime someone in the process. Stricter DUI laws have not lowered the death and injury statistics either. We really need to quit thinking with our asses and start using our heads to figure out a better way. Just maybe EDUCATION and a more effective remedy by allowing people who can prove they don't drink anymore be allowed to have hardship licenses rather than committing people to a life of no drivers license because of a lapse in judgement.
