Legislation Would Drop Driving Ban for North Carolina DWI

New bill would allow those guilty of drunk driving to re-apply for driver’s licenses.

Lawmakers approved a measure that would ease the penalties associated with driving while intoxicated in North Carolina. Under current NC DWI law, some repeat offenders have their driving privileges revoked for life. The new law would allow a driver who lost his/her license for drunk driving in NC to apply for a new license if they have no traffic or criminal convictions within the prior ten years.

The bill's supporters say that penalties for DWI should be tempered with opportunities when alcoholics seek help and recover from their illness. Opponents take the position that offenders should be punished without exception, and that the law is only for the convenience of drunks.

The legislation passed the state House by a vote of 89 to 29, and it is now headed to the state Senate.

Were you charged with DWI in NC?

What the hell are you guys thinking?. Are you out of your minds. Just give a killer a gun why don't you. drunks need help. Lawyers should be held accountable for helping drunks stay out of jail, but they need to take that money and get these people help, instead the lawyers buy new houses around the world. This is crazy!!!!

I'm all about NC easing up the penalties for DWI convictions. Some people (such as myself) are looking at no license for 4 yrs after being charged for DWI. No accident, no injuries to anyone...just was stupid and got caught. Granted what I did was retarded but no license for 4 yrs!!? EXCESSIVE!!!! I can tell this whole thing was initiated by an angry woman lol Someone definitely had an agenda here and was looking for MPP. That's my own abbreviation for Maximum Possible Penalty. Keep drunk drivers off the road but punishment shouldn't be this severe unless there was an accident or some kind of injury or fatality
