The DMV: Department of Motor Vehicles

In the United States, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is the most common name of a government agency which handles vehicle registration and drivers license services. In some states these two broad functions are performed by separate state agencies (see list of state DMV's below).

Driver licensing and vehicle registration in the United States is handled by the state government. The exceptions are in Hawaii, where counties perform DMV functions.
