Kentucky Considers Requirement for Interlock Device After DUI
Law would apply to some first offenders of KY DUI.
A State representative has proposed legislation mandating the installation of an ignition interlock device for certain offenders of drunk driving in Kentucky. House Bill 58 is patterned after laws passed in 12 other states requiring convicted drunk drivers to have their breath tested before being able to start their vehicles.
The bill's author says it is an innovative way to keep Kentucky DUI offenders off the road, and elaborates, “if only one life is saved, I believe the program is worth the effort.” There is no indication of the impact of the program on the state budget.
The legislation calls for the installation of an interlock device for first offense DUI in Kentucky if there are aggravating circumstances, such as speeding, causing an accident with death or injury, or having a blood alcohol content in excess of .18%. According to state statistics, 34,000 motorists were charged with driving under the influence in Kentucky during 2008. Nearly 200 lost their lives to alcohol related accidents.
