Ad Campaign Targets Illinois DUI With 'Loser' Image

New campaign precedes start of stricter drunk driving laws.

DUI Loser ImageThe Illinois Department of Traffic Safety has unveiled a new anti-drunk driving ad campaign that is very graphic and hard hitting. The theme states that "all it takes is one DUI to scar your life", and it features images of people with the word "loser" seared onto their bodies.

It is hoped that the unappealing visual will cause motorists to think twice before driving under the influence in Illinois. The "loser" campaign starts on the advent of a new, strict Illinois DUI law. On January 1 anyone convicted of drunk driving in Illinois will be required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle if they wish to retain their driving privileges. The device disables the vehicle if a breath sample contains alcohol above a pre-set limit. Such an effort to reduce DUI have been gaining favor in states and are being pushed politically by anti-drunk driving advocacy groups. Evidence shows that the overwhelming majority of drivers accused of driving under the influence never repeat the offense. More moderate voices say that focusing on the small percentage of chronic drunk drivers is a more effective way of reducing the problem of drunk driving, and that the effort should include alcohol rehabilitation.

The ad campaign was developed by a Chicago ad agency and it will be distributed via television, radio and on-line.

Have you been charged with DUI in IL?

i think the comment above was a little butt hurt cus he made a conscience decision to go wherever he went and drink. he made a conscience decision to drive. no one put a gun to your head. i have a dui too. i know im not a loser. i know that im going to bounce back from my shortcoming. some people just dont get it. you drink, you drive, you may kill someone. if you dont, someone else was lucky.

Yes I made a decision the wrong one and I am still paying for it today.I have gone through a 12 step program and have been sober for 20 years now.My priorities have changed to my wife and kids. But belittling someone or degrading them doesn't make the situation better.Support is what is needed, when you are an alcolholic. The hard part is accepting that support but once I did everything got better.

I'm not a loser either. my DUI was actually the best thing that's ever happened to me. Now I'm clean and Sober over 11 months. This campaign just shows you how Crappy the State of Illinois actually is.

To me, anybody that puts out campaigns like this is a friggin' loser!

Get a life Illinois, You hate alcohol so then ban it. Why is there a drug on the market that gets you obliviated? Like seat belts, make it mandatory for everybody to have a breahalyzer in there car.

State of Illinois is a friggin' Joke

I am a winner. People that work for the state of illinois are losers!

I agree completely. I live in the shit hole of Illinois. Illinois is anti gun, anti alcohol,(can't buy alcohol past a certain time) and in civil domestic cases, Illinois is anti war veteran. Illinois is gay. The state is presented as a conservative and republican state. Yeah freaking right. I say Illinois is more of a plastic shoe wearing closet case liberal boarder-line commie state. Look at our President. He is the worst one beyond the shadow of a doubt...guess where he is from?lol

I was charged with a DUI for sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car while under the influence. It was not my car and I was not driving. The person who WAS driving had a rich mommy and daddy- so he got a lawyer and had no consequences. I have my ls suspended. Make sense?
