Lawmaker Wants Ignition Interlock for All Georgia DUI Offenders
Proposed law would allow device to be considered for first offense for drunk driving in GA
A state lawmaker has introduced legislation that would make the installation of an ignition interlock device an option following a conviction for driving under the influence in Georgia. Under current Georgia DUI law a judge has the discretion of requiring such a device depending on the circumstances of the case. In addition, those convicted of two or more DUI offenses within a five year period must install an interlock on their vehicle for at least six months. The new law would allow a judge to stipulate the mandatory installation of an interlock in all DUI cases, including first offenders.
The bill's author, Rep Tom Knox, says that the measure will reduce recidivism. He hopes that those with a true drinking problem will be identified before they become a repeat offender.
