Mel Gibson Receives Probation for DUI

Mel Gibson DUI Arrest PhotoMel Gibson, his DUI defense attorney and prosecutors reached a plea agreement Thursday that attempts to close an embarrassing chapter of the actor’s life. Under the agreement Gibson will pay a $1,300 fine, perform public service announcements on drinking and driving and regularly attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He is also placed under a three year ‘supervised probation’ where he will have to periodically return to court to show he is meeting the terms of his agreement.

Gibson was to appear in court on September 28 but all parties involved preferred to avoid a media spectacle. The plea bargain was presented by his DUI defense lawyer to the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Malibu, and the charges stemming from the now infamous July 28 event were resolved quickly. Gibson was not in the courtroom.

Under the deal, Gibson plead no contest to a misdemeanor charge of driving with a blood alcohol level above 0.08, while the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with an open container of alcohol were dropped. Gibson also avoided additional charges like ‘speed enhancement’ for going more than 20 miles per hour
over the posted limit, attempting to leave the arrest scene and threatening a police officer.

In California, first-time DUI offenders often receive probation, especially when there was no accident or injuries.
