Emilio Navaira DWI: Tejano Singer Was Driving While Intoxicated in Texas During Crash

Emilio Navaira accused of drunk driving in Houston accident.

Emilio NavairaTejano singer Emilio Navaira was driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed the band’s tour bus in Houston in March. Harris County officials say that Texas DWI and intoxication assault charges may be filed soon.

Navaira has suffered critical injuries from being thrown through the windshield when he crashed the bus on Loop 610 in west Houston very early Easter morning. He underwent two brain surgeries, and doctors at Memorial Hermann hospital at the Texas Medical Center say his condition is improving. Four band members were treated for minor injuries and released and one member remains in the hospital in good condition with stomach injuries.

In a report released by the Bellaire Police Department, Navaira was driving while intoxicated when he slammed into traffic barrels and a concrete divider on March 23. The Harris County prosecutor said that Navaira, 45, had a commercial driver’s license but not a ‘passenger endorsement’ as required to operate a tour bus. That is a Class C misdemeanor.

Navaira has a previous Texas DWI in San Antonio stemming from an accident in January 2005, and he is paying a fine for another Bexar County drunk driving arrest in 2000. According to Texas DWI laws, an ignition interlock device is required for motorists arrested for 2 or more arrests for driving while intoxicated. An alternative is to have the offender wear an alcohol detecting ankle bracelet and take medication that reacts violently with alcohol. A San Antonio judge waived all of the above requirements.

The 2005 case is still pending, as Navaira’s DWI defense attorney has filed seven motions for suppression of evidence. Because of the 2000 offense however, a conviction in either the recent Houston drunk driving incident or the 2005 San Antonio DWI would raise the remaining case to a felony.

Navaira’s fans have expressed more concern about his recovery than the outcome of the Texas DWI cases.

If you have been arrested for Driving While Intoxicated in Harris County you will need to hire a Houston DWI attorney.

I have to wonder: when are people going to learn? When are people going to 'get it'? Celebrities involved with alcohol and/or drugs are not heroes. Parents, warn your children. DO NOT elevate these irresponsible persons to role-model status.

Regina...you can call it rude if you like. I call it dealing with reality. Do you realize that most people who drink do so in order to escape reality? Are you a drinker? I used to be, but I gave it all up (the drugs too). That's when I became a HERO to my little daughter, who was well aware of my substance abuse. I notice you said <<IVE HEARD ALOT ABOUT YOU ITS ALL GOOD.>> All good? The drinking and the crash too? You should be looking out for the children who's lives are harmed by substance abuse. We don't want them to become irresponsible adults who put fame and popularity above everything else. Our young people need responsible role models. I hope and pray you are making it your daily goal for the young people in your life who look up to you. Emilio CAN become a real hero by coming out publicly announcing he's living sober.

I agree that you should never get behind the wheel and drink or be drunk while driving and as a mother i have taught my kids not to do that and so far they have listened. Now as far as Emilio he will pay his dues rather he has fame or not he is human just like you or I .He has consquences To face. But I feel that it isnt right for you or I to say he is a bad man.No one is perfect and i have not met one person yet that dosent have something going wrong in there lifes. He made a mistake and I garentee you he will never for get what he experienced that day.Im sure that he has thanked God for his life and for others.I want get into it but I have experienced loosing loved ones But GOD spared his life he has learned his lesson.IF we didnt experience things in life we would not learn. Just keep in mind while you are speaking you can word things in a nice way with out bein harsh about someones tragic. PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY
