Arizona Sheriff Forms DUI Chain Gang Dressed in Pink

Notorious Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio starts new policy for inmates convicted of driving drunk.

DUI Chain GangMaricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is adding to his reputation for being a no-nonsense law enforcement agent. He has started a chain gang for men convicted of drunk driving, and he will dress the inmates in bright pink shirts.

The shirts are emblazoned with ‘Sheriff DUI Chain Gang’ on the front and ‘Clean (ing) and Sober’ on the back. The fifteen member chain gang will be responsible for cleaning streets and helping with burials of those who died of alcohol abuse.

DUI Chain GangAccording to a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department spokesman, the chain gang is the first comprised of people who have committed one type of crime. Chain gangs in the US were largely abandoned in the 1950’s after claims of prisoner abuse. Sheriff Joe Arpaio returned to the use of chain gangs in 1994 and he added a female chain gang eleven years ago. The Arizona sheriff is also known for creating a tent city with few creature comforts for those found guilty of crime and for issuing pink underwear to inmates.

By no means do I not take drunk driving lightly but... For first time offenders this is absurd! I have a friend who's character does not include breaking the law. My opinion I think a fine is sufficient and maybe classes or community services. Just remember we have all done it once in our lives a drink or two. By the way just thought I would add if you admit you have had a drink they will not let you drive even if you breath low percent. Not only do they have a DUI on their record there is impound $$ by the mile and daily, Interlock device $$, Prison time $$ yes there is a bill for that too and most of all possible job loss involved. This is devastating and RIDICULOUS and Joe Arpaio's CHAIN GANG is just plain CRUEL and INHUMAINE what a power trip! God is there not a more we can do to the DRUG DEALERS.

Julie, Sorry I have to disagree with your liberal views and side with the Arizona Sheriff. What do you mean by first time? What I mean by that is the commercials and money spent on telling people not to drink and drive for the past 40 years is outrageous. No one who is responsible would be drinking and driving in this day and age. Only selfish people who never take responsibility for their own actions would use the excuse that we have all done it once so lets be lienent on those that get caught doing it for the first time. Julie, All it takes is one time for someone to kill someone else. How can you condone that? We all know that drining and driving is wrong. We all know that drug use is wrong, what's the logical response? DON'T DO IT!
Posted by K Dog at 2008-01-04 06:31
Personally I believe we should kill drug dealers immediately, drunk drivers should be mauled senseless. I don't like light gloves when it comes to criminal offenses and we should just take the gloves off and start killing people. Certain situations like stealing similar to the middle east i believe you should be allowed to cut peoples hands off in the united states, and to top it all off women should be made second class citizens again to be put into line.

Hey, K Dog:
<sarcasm>
What a great idea.
But why stop there? Just behead all the extremists. I think we should make you the judge, jury, and executioner too. Then everyone would get along and there'd be no more hate in the world.

And don't forget: nobody is above the rule of K Dog, even K Dog. Nixon, Bush and Chaney wouldn't have agreed, but so what did those guys know about absolute power anyway?

How anyone could sit there and say that WOMEN should be made second class citizens again to "be put in line" is beyond IGNORANT and IRRATIONAL. As I was reading your "lol" comment I realized how simple minded you were, as you refered to "cutting peoples handing off" or just "killing the drug dealers immediately" and "mauling the drunk senseless" I bet the man behind the computer, is not to worldly or Godly for that matter. We have a legislative system for a reason, so that people that have the indencent morals of the world do not have to worry about things like this. & that goes for your, ENLIGHTENING SPEECH ABOUT YOUR OWN HUMAN RACE!

I'd like to also say, that I have to very much agree with Julie on this. Drunk driving is not something I condone, having lost 2 friends to drunk drivers, I can see the problem that we are facing, and having said that, I can also say that I think what the Sheriff has done here, is beyond Appauling and it's down right cruel. They have diversion programs for peopel who don't have criminal records, so that things like this do not follow them and haunt them for the rest of their lives. REGARDLESS of age, or SENSEABILITY everyone has thought themselves to be "OKAY" when they really weren't, some have that little voice of reason to call a cab, others think they can make it the 10 minute ride home. I believe that for first time offenders, this is completely irrational.
Posted by Tabatha at 2009-03-22 10:35
I am just wondering if you think a mere fine is sufficient for a first time offender even if they killed someone or severely injured someone? All it takes is the first time and people can die and lives will be changed forever. Just so you know, these chain gangs are optional for the prisoners. They choose to be on the chain gang because they are so bored they would rather work than sit in a cell by themselves with nothing to do. Drunk drivers are inhumane and cruel not Joe Arpaio. Do your research and quite defending your friend, think of the utility of all people.
Posted by Marc at 2009-03-29 17:53
This is a very exeptable punishment even for first time offenders. My girlfriend was hit by a drunk driver and is still having problems a year later!! If the mistake is made to drive drunk, then the punishment should be given out. Don't tell me this aint a good punishment for first time offenders, you can kill someone on your first time driving drunk. As far as the ethics of pink uniforms and a chain gang, I love it. The world should be able to spot them out and know what they did!
Posted by Shel Rama at 2009-12-15 02:14
Yo Julie - Do you feel the same way about a drunk who kills someone - even though it was a first offense DUI? Do you think a fine is sufficient? What if it a first-time offense of murder by gun? Do you think a fine is sufficient? Same deal. Intent is intent. Careless disregard for human life constitutes intent. Murder is murder. Where death is not involved in a DUI incident, I would opt for a short prison sentence, say 5 years for a first offense (yes it is a felony). If it is a second offense where no death is involved, I would opt for a longer prison term - say 20 years. We must stop drunk driving. Joe Arpaio is a great humanitarian and should run for the Senate or President at the next election. He is great. We should have a Joe Arpaio in every county of every state in the union. There would be much less crime. Stop babying these idiots. Keep them out of cars, don't let them own guns, keep an ankle bracelet on them to monitor their whereabouts.
Posted by Mary at 2010-08-23 18:21
How did this become an argument about whether or not first time offenders should be cruxified the same way habitual offenders should be! And so you know first time offenses of murder by gun: is STILL MURDER. and hitting someone while drunk wouldn't just be DUI it would be a DUI plus INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER, and seeing how this paragraphy about Sheriff Joes' chain gang didn't mention any of the offenders to be convicted of hurting anyone, just ACTING IRRATIONALLY when it came to their own life and others. They were given this sentence so that yes, they wouldn't have to stay in jail, and so that 2 they would work harder on getting out faster. You have to think about this, most of these programs are not required unless its a rehabiliation and most forms of labor give incentive such as weekly earnings, or a shorter sentence! And your going on about first offenses and second offenses make no sense, if you were convicted of murder the first time, you wouldn't see the light of the outside world to be ABLE TO COMMIT MURDER AGAIN! LIFE TERMS ARE GIVEN OUT ALONG WITH SOME DEATH PENALTIES. . . RESEARCH IS NEEDED HERE!

Doesn't this type of punishment go against the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005, which prohibits, among other things, degrading treatment of those in U.S. Custody? DUI is wrong, but so is breaking Federal Law.
Posted by Nye at 2008-03-28 07:59
A few people are really misguided here. For the person who sympathized with here friends first time nonsense. Truth be told that was the first time getting caught. For those of us who go out party and clubing we still do not take the necessary precautions for a safe ride home. For that reason we take advantage of the graces given to us because we made it home and all is well. Each time that happens we become more and more dissillusioned (if I spelled it right!!). So a good shock to the system for being caught the first time could be the shock to save our lives and other people lives. Let's not hate on the process but appreciate the warning!!!!!! None of us are perfect.

Ok - how did your friend get into jail? Oh broke the law - oh thank God your friend is not injured and they didnt injure someone. If your friend is smart they wont go back. - ever been in Jail?

Think twice about how much you love this cold blooded sherrif. My neighbor was arrested for a DUI (I'm not for this), she was sent to the sherrifs "tent city" where all the inmates sleep inside a tent with NO AC IN 115 degree weather and she DIED 3 days later. She was also DENIED MEDICAL CARE WHEN SHE ASKED FOR IT.

NOT SO SURE WHAT IS SO MUCH TO LOVE ABOUT THIS SHERRIF, HE'S NO BETTER THAN THE INMATES.

P.S

Just so everyone knows, DUI laws exist to generate revenue for the State. By "State" I mean not only for the State in which you reside, but also for the federal government, the local government, and lets not forget the law enforcement hypocrites. By "hypocrites" I mean the many, many police officers who arrest people for DUI charges and turn around and they themselves go out for a night on the town. You're finally starting to hear about this. What you won't hear about are the rulers of this nation getting DUIs. You think they honestly don't go out and entertain the foreign dignitaries? Alcohol is and also has been a huge influence on social life. Jesus Christ is pictured at The Last Supper with the disciples with goblets of wine. Think about it. That dude knew he was going to be crucified. You know he was getting his "drink on" that night. Maybe we should focus on the ill teachings of religion. Blame our inherent bad decision making on our creator. I know I'll be kicking "Him" in the nutz if I ever receive the honor of making his acquaintance. The worst part about all the DUI laws is that it's just the first step toward a total Police State. Like it or not, death is the only certainty of life. Dying from an alcohol related "accident" is probably better than suffering the horror of cancer.
Posted by Mark at 2008-08-21 12:35
What are you talking about....DUI laws are in place to save lives and protect innocent people, like your family, who drive on America's roadways everyday. Cops are no better than anyone else. I know a few police officers who have been arrested for DUI and lost there career over it, as they should have. It has nothing to do with making money for the government. Sure there are fines, but you need to get a better grasp on what your talking about...and you should't talk crap about Jesus. I'd love to be there when you "try" to kick him in the nutz....
Posted by gfys at 2008-08-21 18:53
Dude wake the hell up. We live in a capitalist nation. Nothing is done unless it involves the generation of revenue. Hence the creation of b/s laws like DUI. Like you said, people's careers are lost, their entire lives ruined. That's a small trade off for our beloved government. They maintain the image of caring for us and looking after us. If you doubt my theory on revenue, can you explain to me why tobacco is still legal? If the government is really trying to save lives, and they know for a fact tobacco use causes cancer, hence death, why is it not illegal? Oh right, because they tax the hell out of it and make billions of dollars annually. Why would they want to give up the free money? And as for "Jesus", he's a figment of your imagination, most likely because you are afraid of death and the unknown.
Posted by Michele at 2009-12-11 17:25
Let me guess, you were abducted by aliens!?! You sound like on of those wackos that claims the government has "spy" devices in our heads! Do you have a metal cap somewhere to protect you!?!

I would love to see Jesus kick you in the nutz!! Just so you know, it's because of Jesus Christ that Christians are not afriad to die!!

Grow up! Live a month in the shoes of a child who lost thier parent to a drunk driver, and then come back and tell me that DUI laws are just "government money making schemes"!! Live a month in the shoes of the President, and then talk bad about the country! Better yet, go to Iraq with our Soldiers! I hope you get shot by the terrorists!!
Posted by Andrew at 2010-08-28 05:31
You should try living in the shoes of a child who lost their parent to a driver that doesn't know the proper way to drive and/or do basic maintenance on their vehicle.

After all, it is a much bigger issue than drunk driving. Why don't you fight against bad drivers? Why not old drivers? Why not drivers who talk(even hands-free) on a phone?

We CAN change the skills and awareness of the drivers on our roads. What we CAN'T change is the percentage of drunk drivers that end up killing themselves and a relatively small number of innocents. The former is basic training of offensive driving techniques and car control, the latter is a mental health issue requiring tailored therapy and understanding of complex life situations and emotions.

The numbers don't lie, but they can be misconstrued by a group like MADD. (Like the BAC.01+ numbers which 1/3 are motorcycles and another sizable group are willing passengers. Only 2-4,000 out of the yearly 12-15,00 are completely innocent citizens) So in the eyes of DUI demonizers, 1/3 of the offenders are already punished to the maximum by crashing their harley into a tree after drinking...

1994-- BAC .00 = 24,948 (61%) BAC .01-.07 = 2,236 (5%) BAC .08+ = 13,390 (33%) TOTAL: 40,716 fatalities
2000-- BAC .00 = 26,082 (62%) BAC .01-.07 = 2,422 (6%) BAC .08+ = 13,324 (32%) TOTAL: 41,945 fatalities
2005-- BAC .00 = 27,423 (63%) BAC .01-.07 = 2,404 (6%) BAC .08+ = 13,582 (31%) TOTAL: 43,510 fatalities
2008-- BAC .00 = 23,317 (63%) BAC .01-.07 = 2,072 (6%) BAC .08+ = 11,773 (32%) TOTAL: 37,261 fatalities

Posted by Michele at 2009-12-11 17:14
How do you even know she asked for medical attention? Were you there? As for no ac in 115 degree weather, give me a break! Our troops are in Iraq in 115 degree weather in full gear! Do you even have the slightest idea of how hot the full gear is? Try adding another 25 pounds onto your shoulders! Our troops do not get ac, and they do not complain! Oh, and may I remind you, that unless they are shot, they survive the heat! Why should a person who broke the law get better treatment than the troop that kept them free to break it in the first place!?!
Posted by Joe Nutt at 2010-08-26 08:10
Its punishment, its supposed to suck. You don't go to jail for a relaxing vacation, you go to provide retribution to the state for a committed offense. If you don't want to risk going to jail, DON'T BREAK THE LAW! Sounds pretty simple to me. I'll bet that if your friend had not broken the law and went to jail, thay would have been free to seek all the medical attention that they could stand. Besides, your friend's case is only a rare exception. Mortality rates for people that drink and drive are significantly higher than the rest of us, not only from drinking and driving, but from making generally poor life decisions.
Posted by Shel Rama at 2009-03-01 01:41
More than 1,500,000 people have been murdered by drunken drivers since 1945. More than all the wars we have been involved with since that date. This is more people murdered than were murdered by firearms. Lets get serious. Stop attacking gun owners and go after drunks who drive. Murder is murder, whether committed with a gun or with a car and a drunk behind the wheel. Intent is intent (careless disregard for human life constitutes intent). In many countries, drunken drivers who kill people are executed before the sun sets that same day. Lets get serious.

I think that the USA has killed far more that one-and-a-half million people in wars since 1945. Four million in the American War of Agression in Vietnam if I'm not mistaken (and I am not).

You poor uneducated Jesus-loving Yanks really have no idea that you have become the laughing stock of the Western World. You are not even a real "first world" country, especially not when compared to Western Europe, Canada and Australia. I think of the US as the new "second world."

Ludicrous medieval punishments devised by the likes of this moron sheriff who I will not bother naming prove my point.

Thank God I will never be under the power of people like this sheriff who is probably as uneducated as those of you who actually support him.

I met some poor mongrel Yank who had been raped up the arse for eight months for three DUIs. While he did deserve a kick up the arse, I do not think he deserved numerous dicks up his arse. No doubt, many of you who have posted on this forum will say that he did. I would say to you that, if you were earning more than five dollars an hour, you may be able to afford an education and realise just how idiotic you sound now.

Oh, and drugs are great. Ecstacy and marijuana are way better than alcohol and cigarettes (which account for 99% of all drug deaths).

When the US is finally toppled as the world superpower by China in the next couple of decades then I hope that the world needn't suffer your ignorant and murderous foreign policy perpentrated by the fellow idiots that you elect.

Jesus, by the way, was a criminal executed for insurrection in the temple (news flash: he wasn't God, just another messianic lunatic). No doubt you all approve of this method of social control.

I don't dislike all Yanks BTW. I have some American friends; however, they are all anti-americans like myself.
Posted by Shel Rama at 2009-04-02 23:35
This ignorant person should move as soon as possible. Maybe he should move to North Korea. China? Haiti? Just get him out of the country. This ignorant boob didn't even realize we were talking about murder by bottle. Drunks on the road deserve to be de-humanized by their fellow inmate felons. Whether a broom-stick or whatever. Keep the drunks off the road by whatever means possible and leave our guns alone.
Posted by Peter Atkins at 2009-12-15 01:14
Actually, it seems as though you have your wish. I have lived in China for over a year now. There is more personal freedom to be had here than in the West. Albeit you will go to jail for 15 days for DD here, you will certainly not find yourself on a chain gang.

I have never been to the USA and I never will. You keep your guns. Hopefully more of you redneck idiots will shoot each other.
Posted by Shel Rama at 2009-12-15 01:52
Peter, I hope you are never allowed back in God's country. I would like to be there when you are at death's door. Your attitude will change. I should like to record that scenario. Remember that citizens without guns are subjects (subject to tyranny from an oppressive government). Take a look at countries where their citizens are not allowed to own guns. Many of them have been killed by the government in the past 40 years (Cambodia, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Congo, Cuba, China, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, and now we shall see what happens in Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, with their newly minted anti-gun laws. Our Second Amendment was not enacted to protect us from terrorists, gangsters, invaders, etc., it was to protect the citizens from the government (at that time guess what - the UK).
Posted by Peter Atkins at 2009-12-15 02:12
Listen, I am not American. I have never been there. I have been to over 30 countries, but America is not one of them. I have ambitions to see another 30 countries, but the US is not on that list. I am a part of the silent majority of the world's population who just dislikes the USA.

As for the gun laws, I really don't care what you do to each other in your own country, but I don't like you invoking Cambodia in your argument. There were more than enough guns there, thanks to the American War of Aggression in Vietnam, it was Nixon's bombing campaign that allowed the Khmer Rouge to take over. The US again has responsibility for this travesty of history.

Do the world a favour and keep your guns there and shoot each other. Just don't take them outside the country so that a 21yo "Sergeant" with a grade 9 education and earning $19K per year can shoot people in order to save Americans two cents on a litre of petrol.
Posted by Shel Rama at 2009-12-15 02:36
Yo Peter - I am glad you are not an American. If you were an American and continued talking the way you are talking, I would track you down and knock you out. You are wrong about Cambodia. I am friends with several survivor Cambodian Americans who lost most of their relatives to the Khmer Rouge thugs of Pol Pot's Army. They had no guns to defend themselves with. The government had taken away the guns and criminalized the mere possession of a gun. When the thugs came around (most were teenagers 13-17 years old) they simply rounded up the people and marched them off to work in the rice fields or whatever.

It was not Nixon's bombing campaign that allowed the Khmer Rouge to take over. Nixon ended the Vietnam War, which was started by the Kennedys and LBJ, and never ordered any bombing of Cambodia. The Vietnam War was about drugs. A $40 billion a year opium crop (in 1970 dollars) from the Golden Triangle (including Cambodia)had been exiting SE Asia through Saigon for generations. The mob folks financed Kennedy's campaign and he simply repaid a debt when we started the Vietnam War to try to prevent that opium corp from falling into Communist hands. Wake up and read up. Read "Double Cross" written by the brother and Godson of mobster Sam Giancana.

You are so totally uninformed it is pathetic. You are pathetic.

Hey Peter! I agree! We are the second world! Just keep reminding yourself that when we celebrate our Independance day for Kicking your country's arse! By the way, our medieval laws, they were developed off of Englands!

As for ecstacy and pott, I hope you get a bad batch, and die of overdose or poison!!

Uneducated!?! Right! Tell me why then do we have people from ALL over the world coming to OUR AMERICAN schools to become Educated!?! Maybe you should try our schools, you might learn something!!!!

As for Jesus!! I hope I die before you, so I can watch him kick your arse to H**l where it belongs! I hope your Anti-American, American friends join you!!

I am not British; and the only reason you won the War of Independence (or the War of We Don't Want to Pay Taxes to the British who are Protecting us from the Natives) is due to the help of the French. There is NO Way you could have repelled the British navy without their help, and now they hate you also.

Don't disagree that your laws seem to be modelled from medieval English law.

If I do get a bad batch of ecstacy (I can't see a bad batch of pot killing me), then it will be the US's murderous "war on drugs" that cause this. If the US had not, in its ignorant piety, railroaded international drug laws into the most idiotic lowest common denominator possible, then there would be no bad batches as they would be made in registered laboratories.

Believe it or not, there are many other international destinations other than the US that people travel to for an education.

If Jesus loving evangelical moron Yanks posthumously go to wherever you call heaven then I certainly hope to go that I never go there. This would be the worst hell imaginable.

Tell Peter Atkins, that he definitely should move to China. If China does topple the U.S. as the world superpower in the next two decades, God help us. We will be subjects to the most notorious tyrannical regime since Stalin. Human rights will be a thing of the past. Peter, you are so uneducated, it is shameful. I have 5 (five) earned degrees and I can tell you that you are wrong. You are also wrong about Jesus. Jesus is God. Jesus is also Man. He will return and you will receive your just punishment for blasphemy. Good luck man.

I was not speaking of other countries' people killed in wars. I was speaking of citizens of the US killing each other. More US citizens have been killed by drunk drivers since 1945 than have US citizens been killed in all of the wars we have ever been involved in since our Civil War. Some states even allow drive-in liquor stores. Can you believe it? This is an invite to drunk driving.

You speak of this poor idiot who was raped after going to jail for a DUI? This only indicates the type of weak idiot that will drive while drunk. He is too weak to defend himself from some low-grade moron career criminal. If someone drives drunk and kills someone, first offense of not, tie him/her to a post, blind fold them and give them a last cigarette. This will never happen because our penal system is too weak.

If you really believe that maybe you would realize that "If there were more people in Law enforcement like this sheriff we would have less crime," sounds much more proper than "If [they] were more Law Enforcement like this Sheriff we would have less crime." I just want to say, I love the fact that Joe Arpaio has started this, it is great we need more people like this. The people that complane that this is wrong are crazy. I think if you do the crime you lose everything, you shouldn't have any rights you made that choice when you dont obay the law.

Total raging alcoholic, in case you miss thee obvious physical signs of bloated face and nose, and massive faaciaal broken blood vessels. His tour de force is a duo of deputees thaat sstand outside while he gets trashed, so F you and your pompous idealogy.

How can we get this guy on a presidential ballot? This is the type of person who could restore this country's moral values. Joe Arpaio for Pres 2012. Screw these politically correct, liberal idiots who have destroyed our country.

This is stupid. What is this going to help. It's like going to the morge to take a pulse. I believe we need to be pro active and stop the patron at the exit door before the put lives in danger and if patron can not drive after mandatory test, then the establishment who helped patron reach this condition, should be held responsible along with the patron, to make the choice THEN AND THERE ~not to drive~. They can then be given a pre paid taxi card, and take their drunk ass home alive to their 8 month old infant. I heard about RADD. Have you?

Kommindant herr Joe Arpaio operates a kz.Treats his charges like kzlers.
When does herr Arpaio start building his crematoriums?
There is something old slave south and/or Nazi about it that disgust me.
This is the approved way of a lot of the people!?
