Arizona DUI Arrest Increase in 2009

Total number of AZ drunk driving arrests up.

The Governor's Office has released figures indicating that number of arrests for driving under the influence in Arizona was higher in 2009 than the previous year. Sixteen AZ DUI task forces initiated more than 14,000 arrests, compared to 10,500 arrests during 2008. Nearly 4,500 of the total drunk driving arrests during 2009 were made between Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

The totals for the year included 960 drunk driving arrests where the motorist had an blood alcohol reading of .15% or higher, considered extreme DUI under state law.

960 out of 14,000 arrests were .15 BAC and above? That's not a lot. That tells me 91% of the arrests were for people who were just intoxicated enough to be illegal, but not severly impaired. It shows that the focus of the taskforces is to earn money for Arizona DUI and not to stop true drunk drivers.

If any of you go to the hospital and they take your blood, beware, they are putting the alcohol in you. policeabuse.weebly.com

AZ law requires all first time offenders, even with a BAC of 0.0000, to have an ignition interlock device. If you are arrested for DUI Marijuana, expect a one year REVOCATION of your license, jail, fines, and a one year required Ignition Interlock Device.

Is there any possibility of an appeal to remove the IID requirement for no alcohol related DUI? Lawyers and Drug counselors are amused and confused by the requirement in the case of DUI-Marijuana charges (first time, failure to come to a complete stop before the sidewalk while leaving a convenience store parking lot)

To add to Richard's comment, the arrest took place during a Halloween weekend DUI task force with trailers, lights, and media set up 2 miles down the road. They were very proud of their success and the local media applauded their efforts.

There are some of us who actually earn it I got one in 2010 and my blood test came back as .217 when I did 3rd party testing with my lawyer it came back even higher ... so much for pleading down ;)

However I'd agree it's all a racket to steal more money from people, that's all they care about. They've done little to prevent me or anyone else from drinking and driving or even to educate people about the laws and penalties. I found out it was going to cost me about $20,000 altogether AFTER I got out of the court room.

My insurance will remain tripled for at least the next 3 years and I pay $90 a month for the IID for 18 months as well so it's the gift that keeps on giving. Definitely the most expensive free beer I've ever had :P

90% of DUI is for people who had 1 or 2 drinks which is enough to get a normal sized person close to the legal limit. You can get a DUI in AZ for under .08 it's called "impaired to the slightest degree" that's also why weed or prescription medecine can get you one as well. It's pretty much up to the cop's discretion so be polite and show some tits if you got them.

Only 6% of car accidents are caused by drunk drivers and every year more people die from the flu then from drunk driving and alchohol related accidents.

It's not about your safety people anymore than speed limits are otherwise there would never be anything posted higher than 40mph. It's about your bank accounts and the emptying of them because 50% of everyone's money in taxes isn't enough to float a budget apparently.

6% of car accidents are caused by drunk driving? Ridiculous. Try 32%. Of the 33,808 people who died in motor vehicle collisions in 2009, 10,839 were from alcohol-related collisions. That's nearly one-third. It's not that difficult to drink responsibly, get a designated driver or call a cab. Please do not make light of the consequences of drunk driving.
