On the first of the year a new law went into effect requiring motorists convicted of driving under the influence in Alaska to install an ignition interlock device if they wish to continue driving. The miniature breath testing device requires the driver to provide a breath test before starting the vehicle. If a blood alcohol content in excess of a pre-set amount, usually under .03%, the device will disable the vehicle ignition.

Alaska joins five other states in requiring ignition interlock devices for all, even first time, DUI offenders.

McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told reporters in gathering in St. Paul before the Republican National Convention that Todd Palin was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Alaska in 1986. Palin reportedly was driving a pick-up truck with friends in the town of Dillingham, Alaska when he was stopped. Todd and Sarah were dating at the time.

The drunk driving story was broke by conservative correspondent David Brody, with the Christian Broadcasting Network News. Schmidt went on to say he was not worried about the news.

An Alaskan state legislator has crafted a bill that would require a mark to be placed on driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards of some DWI offenders. House Bill 14 would apply to those convicted of drunk driving whose court mandated terms of probation or parole prohibit consumption of alcohol.

Representative Harry Crawford said, “We are working to keep Alaskan families safe from drunk drivers. This law will prevent carnage caused by drunk drivers by stopping repeat offenders from buying alcohol.”

Crawford’s bill was unanimously approved by the Alaska House of Representatives and it has been rolled into an omnibus crime bill being prepared by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
